In short
Flights from Barishal to Dhaka run nonstop from Barishal Airport (BZL) at Rahmatpur to Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (DAC) in about 45 minutes. Biman Bangladesh Airlines is the only airline at Barishal and flies the 116 km route on a Dash 8-400 turboprop with 20 kg of checked baggage.
There are three departures a week. BG472 leaves Barishal at 11:45 on Fridays and Sundays and lands at 12:30, and BG474 leaves at 18:05 on Thursdays. On the other four days, the bus over the Padma Bridge or the overnight launch to Sadarghat is the way to the capital.
Leaving Barishal by air starts with a 12 km drive north to the airport, so allow for the road out of town. After that it is quick: the Dash 8-400 covers the distance to Dhaka in less time than a cross-town drive in the capital often takes.
The terminal is small and check-in rarely takes long, but turn up with time to spare all the same, because a missed flight on a three-a-week route means a wait of days for the next seat.
You land at Hazrat Shahjalal's domestic terminal, a separate building from the international halls. If you have booked an overseas flight on a separate ticket, collect your bag and check in again at the international side, and leave a generous gap between the two. For trains to Chattogram, Sylhet or the north, Airport railway station is directly across the road.
Being domestic, the flight needs only a National ID card for Bangladeshis. Foreign visitors check in with a passport.

Yes, and it cuts the return considerably. Kuakata, with its 18 km beach where you can watch both sunrise and sunset over the Bay of Bengal, lies in Patuakhali district within Barishal Division. Drive north to Rahmatpur and catch the Biman flight to save the long road trip to Dhaka.
Yes. Service was suspended for nine years and only came back in April 2015. Since then the Dash 8-400 service to Dhaka has been the airport's only scheduled route.
Biman includes 20 kg in the hold and 7 kg in the cabin on standard economy fares. Excess is paid at check-in at Rahmatpur, so weigh food parcels and gifts before leaving home.
Getting there
No. Biman's service to Shahjalal is the only scheduled route from the airport, so trips to Chattogram, Cox's Bazar or Sylhet mean changing planes in Dhaka. Book the two flights on one ticket so your luggage is transferred for you.
Construction finished in 1985, but the airport was not formally inaugurated until 3 December 1995. Biman started flying there the month before, in November 1995.
Aero Bengal Airlines, a private company, launched the first commercial flights. Biman followed in November 1995 and is now the only airline at the airport.
The single runway is 5,995 ft long, comfortable for a Dash 8-400 but short for most jets. Until the runway is lengthened, the route will stay with turboprop aircraft.
You will have to wait for the next seat with the same airline, which may not be until another day on busy dates. The fallback is the road over the Padma Bridge, which opened in June 2022 and carries buses straight through to Dhaka.
Services from Airport railway station head to Chattogram, Sylhet and the northern districts, so a flight from Barishal can link up with a train onward without a trip into the city. Check the timetable for your train before choosing a flight.
