Dhaka to Barishal flight guide
Flights from Dhaka to Barishal take about 45 minutes from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (DAC) to Barishal Airport (BZL) at Rahmatpur. Biman Bangladesh Airlines is the only airline on the 116 km route, flying a Dash 8-400 turboprop. Most passengers are visiting family or working in the southern districts.
The schedule is short. Biman's BG471 leaves Dhaka at 10:45 on Fridays and Sundays, and BG473 departs at 17:00 on Thursdays. That makes three flights a week, so a missed flight can cost you several days, and seats before the Eids go early.
The flight competes with two surface options. The overnight launch from Sadarghat lands in Barishal the next morning and saves a hotel night, and buses have crossed the Padma Bridge since it opened in 2022. On a day without a flight, the bus is the quickest way south.
Barishal Airport is at Rahmatpur in Babuganj, about 12 km north of the city beside the Dhaka-Barishal highway. Arrange a car or take a CNG auto-rickshaw into town. Most hotels are on Band Road or Sadar Road, near the launch ghat on the Kirtankhola.
In the monsoon a few passengers come for the floating guava market at Bhimruli near Jhalokathi, at its busiest in July and August.
No passport is needed on this domestic hop. Bangladeshi citizens show a National ID card at check-in; foreign visitors use their passport. Biman includes 20 kg of checked baggage.

Getting there
No private airline currently schedules Barishal, although US-Bangla, NOVOAIR and Air Astra serve other domestic airports. Biman has flown the route since November 1995, and with no competitor the choice is between its Dash 8-400, the river and the road.
For many, yes. You board in the evening, sleep in a cabin and wake up on the Kirtankhola, saving a night's hotel. Book a private cabin for a proper night's sleep; deck space is crowded. The flight suits anyone short on time.
No. The single-track railway on the bridge's lower deck belongs to the line towards Jashore, not Barishal. Travellers to Barishal choose between the flight, a launch or a bus over the upper road deck.
Yes. Two of the places under Where to stay are close to the river: a rest house in the BIWTC building on Band Road, near where the launches tie up, and a hotel on South Port Road by the Kirtankhola. Both suit travellers who fly in and plan to leave by river.
Cancellations & changes
Since the 6.15 km bridge opened in June 2022, buses and cars cross on its four-lane upper deck with no ferry wait. That has made the road a strong rival to the plane, especially for groups and families travelling together.
With no second airline, the backups are the overnight launch from Sadarghat or a bus over the Padma Bridge. Ask Biman about the next available seat first, then switch to road or river if the wait is too long.
Stay & facilities
A business hotel on Band Road, beside Bell's Park, has both; it is one of the hotels under Where to stay. A simpler alternative faces the park on the same road.
Prices & payment
Sadar Road, one of the two main hotel streets, has budget rooms. The hotel there under Where to stay is a short ride from the launch ghat, which makes it a practical base for a quick visit.
Booking
The Dash 8-400 carries 74 passengers in economy. With just one airline and one aircraft type on the route, seats can run out on popular dates, so book as soon as your plans are fixed.
General
20 kg checked and 7 kg in the cabin on a standard economy ticket. Anything above that is charged at the airport, so pack gifts and food parcels for family with the scale in mind.
