Buriram to Bangkok flight guide
Getting to Buriram Airport takes almost as long as the flight. The terminal is in Satuek district, about 34 km north of Buriram town, while the flight to Bangkok Don Mueang (DMK) takes about 50 minutes and covers some 320 km. Thai AirAsia is the only airline on the route.
Allow 30 to 40 minutes from Buriram town, and more than an hour from Surin. A privately run van connects Buriram bus station with the airport, and Grab is handy for the trip out from town even though it is unreliable for arrivals. In race weeks the roads around Chang International Circuit clog up, so leave earlier still. Aim to reach the terminal 90 minutes before departure, or two hours or more during MotoGP: Thai AirAsia closes bag drop 60 minutes before the flight. The Buriram Airport guide covers the new terminal and parking.
Facilities are limited. We could not confirm a lounge or individual food outlets in the new terminal, so eat in Buriram before you set off and charge your phone too.
Flights arrive at Terminal 2, the domestic side of Don Mueang, about 24 km north of central Bangkok. The SRT Red Line station across the footbridge reaches Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal in about 20 minutes, where the MRT Blue Line takes over. Airport buses A1 to A4 serve Mo Chit, Victory Monument, Pratunam and Khao San Road, and the public taxi rank is on the arrivals level outside Gate 8. Our Don Mueang airport guide has the details.
Connecting abroad from Suvarnabhumi? Take the free inter-airport bus, available to passengers with an onward ticket, and expect an hour or more on the road. Leave at least three to four hours between your Buriram flight and the next departure.
The four airport buses leave from the first floor of the terminal. A1 runs to Mo Chit 2 bus terminal via BTS Chatuchak from 6:50 am to 11:59 pm and A2 to Victory Monument from 5 am to 10 pm, both for 30 baht. A3 goes to Pratunam, Ratchaprasong and Lumpini Park from 7 am to 11 pm, and A4 to Democracy Monument, Khao San Road and Sanam Luang from 7 am to 10:40 pm, both for 50 baht. A1 is the handy one for long-distance buses north and north-east from Mo Chit.
Airports of Thailand lists the shuttle to Suvarnabhumi as leaving from the first floor of the international terminal at Gate 6, between 5 am and midnight. Domestic arrivals land at Terminal 2, so allow time to walk across to Gate 6.
Staying in Bangkok overnight before an international flight removes the risk of a missed connection after an evening arrival from Buriram, especially in MotoGP week. For transport questions, the Airports of Thailand call centre answers on 1722.
If you do stay near Suvarnabhumi instead, the airport's public transportation centre has cheap links on to the city and suburbs: BMTA bus S1 to Sanam Luang from 6 am to 5 pm for 60 baht, and minibus 552 to On Nut on the BTS line from 5 am to 10 pm.
Thai AirAsia's basic fare includes a cabin bag only. If you are taking home silk from Surin or other shopping, buy checked baggage online before the day of travel.
After a race weekend, demand for flights back to Bangkok peaks on the Sunday evening and Monday. Booking the return at the same time as the outbound is the safest approach.

Three tips for the trip back to Bangkok.
The airport is out in Satuek. In race weeks, the roads near the circuit add more time.
Food in the new terminal is unconfirmed and there is no lounge. Arrive fed and with a charged phone.
Return flights after MotoGP sell out first. Book them with the outbound flight and arrive in good time.
Coaches to Bangkok take five to six hours, which is practical if flights are full.
