In short

SriLankan Airlines, Thai Airways International and Thai AirAsia fly nonstop from Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) near Colombo to Bangkok. The 2,392 km flight takes about 3 hours 30 minutes. Bangkok is a regular shopping and holiday trip from Sri Lanka, and SriLankan's flight also feeds passengers heading on to East Asia.

Full-service into Suvarnabhumi, Thai AirAsia into Don Mueang

SriLankan Airlines and Thai Airways arrive at Suvarnabhumi (BKK) with a checked bag and meal in the fare. Thai AirAsia arrives at Don Mueang (DMK) and charges for hold luggage, food and seat choice. Shoppers expecting a heavy return should price a full-service ticket for the way home.

Bus 187 or a taxi to Katunayake

Bandaranaike International Airport is at Katunayake, about 35 km north of Colombo. The route 187 air-conditioned bus runs 24 hours a day between Colombo Fort Railway Station and the airport along the Colombo–Katunayake Expressway, taking about 50 minutes. By taxi the expressway, 28.87 km long, cuts the trip to roughly 30 to 45 minutes. Hotels in Negombo are closer for early departures.

Filing the TDAC before you leave Colombo

File the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) on tdac.immigration.go.th before you fly. It is free, opens three days before arrival and covers every non-Thai passenger.

Since 15 September 2026, a 30-day visa exemption for 60 countries and territories has replaced the 60-day scheme. Sri Lanka was not named in that announcement, so Sri Lankan passport holders should check the Thai e-Visa portal. Visitors ending a Sri Lanka holiday should check their own nationality too, using our Thailand visa page as a guide.

Rail Link, Grab and the S1 bus to Sanam Luang

Suvarnabhumi lies about 25 km east of central Bangkok. The Airport Rail Link reaches Phaya Thai in about 27 minutes and meets the BTS Skytrain; Makkasan links to the MRT Blue Line. Metered taxis and Grab wait outside arrivals, and the S1 bus runs to Sanam Luang in the old city for 60 baht between 06:00 and 17:00.

Don Mueang buses and a short ride to Pratunam

Don Mueang is in the north. The A1 bus runs via BTS Chatuchak to Mo Chit 2 from 06:50 to 23:59, and the A2 via Chatuchak to Victory Monument from 05:00 to 22:00; both cost 30 baht from Gate 6 of the international terminal. Pratunam's markets are a short ride from Victory Monument. The SRT Red Line runs to Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal for the MRT Blue Line.

Crossing to Suvarnabhumi for the Dhaka flights

The Dhaka flights on Biman, US-Bangla and Thai Airways leave from Suvarnabhumi (see Bangkok to Dhaka flights). If you land at Don Mueang, minibus 555 crosses to Suvarnabhumi between 06:30 and 20:00 for up to 60 baht, but leave plenty of time for the road and a new check-in.

When returning to Sri Lanka, remember that every foreign national needs a new ETA from eta.gov.lk before arrival. Colombo also has direct flights to Bangladesh: see Colombo to Dhaka flights.
