Dhaka to Colombo flight guide
Both airlines fly nonstop from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka (DAC) to Bandaranaike International Airport near Colombo (CMB): SriLankan Airlines and FitsAir. The 2,166 km flight takes about 3 hours 25 minutes, and it suits beach and tea-country holidays as well as onward trips to the Maldives through SriLankan's Colombo hub.
Both airlines are Sri Lankan. SriLankan Airlines, the state-owned flag carrier, often sends a wide-body Airbus A330 on this route, and sometimes an A320, with 30 kg of checked baggage. FitsAir, a private carrier, launched the route in 2024 with an Airbus A320 and includes 20 kg. Both allow 7 kg in the cabin.
From Colombo, SriLankan flies on to Malé and Gan in the Maldives, so a single ticket from Dhaka reaches the islands with one stop. FitsAir also serves Malé.
Most visitors need a Sri Lankan Electronic Travel Authorization, applied for online through the official eta.gov.lk site before departure. Some 40 nationalities had the fee waived in 2026; Bangladesh was not among them, so citizens of Bangladesh pay for theirs. Check your own passport on the official site and carry a printout of the approval.
Bandaranaike International stands at Katunayake, about 32 km north of Colombo. The Colombo-Katunayake Expressway (E03) runs from the airport to the edge of the city, and a car takes around 15 minutes on it in clear traffic. Negombo, a beach town much closer to the airport, makes an easy first night after a late arrival.
The southwest monsoon brings heavy rain to Colombo and the west coast from mid-May to October. From December to March the monsoon falls mainly on the east and north-east, so those months are the drier time for Colombo itself.
Two airlines operate direct flights from Dhaka (DAC) to Colombo (CMB). The flight takes about 3h 25m.

Timing & weather
The standard tourist ETA allows a 30-day stay and is applied for online through the official eta.gov.lk site. Your passport needs at least six months of validity left. Plan the trip to fit inside that window.
General
The system has had outages, most recently reported in March 2026, and during those spells visa on arrival has been allowed. Do not count on it: try to get the ETA approved before leaving Dhaka, and carry a printout in case the airline asks for it at check-in.
Warm all year. Daytime highs sit around 30 to 32 C and peak in March and April. Humidity stays above 70% and passes 90% in June, so pack light cotton clothing.
Yes. From its Colombo hub SriLankan flies to Malé and to Gan, so a through ticket from Dhaka can take you on to the islands with one stop. FitsAir also serves Malé from Colombo.
It has offered one on its regional network since 25 April 2025. The airline runs two A320s with 164 seats in total, so the business section is small. Check that your Dhaka flight has it before paying for the upgrade.
Seats are in pairs, two either side of the aisle, with a pitch of 39 to 49 inches depending on the row. That is plenty of room for a flight of under four hours.
As of September 2026 its scheduled network covers Ahmedabad, Malé, Dubai and Dhaka, with Dubai suspended until 19 November 2026 and Chennai due to restart on 24 November 2026. Check the latest list before planning a connection.
Getting there
About 15 minutes in clear traffic. The Colombo-Katunayake Expressway, opened in 2013, runs 25.8 km from the airport to the New Kelani Bridge on the edge of the city. Allow longer for city traffic beyond the bridge.
The southwest monsoon brings heavy rain to Colombo and the west coast from mid-May to October. The December to March monsoon falls mainly on the east and north-east, which makes those months the drier time for a Colombo trip.
Yes. It is fully state-owned, and plans to privatise it were dropped in September 2024. Colombo is its hub, and its FlySmiLes members earn status that matches the oneworld tiers.
