Flying from Cox's Bazar to Nilphamari

In short

Biman Bangladesh Airlines runs the only nonstop from Cox's Bazar Airport (CXB) to Saidpur Airport (SPD), a 571 km domestic flight of about 1 hour 30 minutes. It takes beach holidaymakers home to Rangpur Division without a connection through Dhaka.

BG536, a weekly link for Rangpur Division

Biman opened the route in October 2021 so that people from the eight districts of Rangpur Division could reach the sea without the Dhaka detour. BG536 runs once a week, so book early for holidays.

Turboprop aircraft and the 20 kg allowance

Expect a turboprop. Saidpur's runway is 6,000 ft long, and airlines using it fly ATR 72 and Dash 8-400 aircraft; your booking names the type. Turboprop lockers are small, so keep the 7 kg cabin bag soft and compact.

The checked allowance is 20 kg, and it fills fast with beach shopping. Dried fish and pickles are heavy, so weigh the bag at the hotel, and wrap shutki in several sealed layers because the smell travels. Excess is charged at the Biman counter.

National ID or passport at check-in

Bangladeshi passengers show their National ID card. Visitors from abroad show a passport, even though the flight never leaves the country. Cox's Bazar was declared an international airport on 13 October 2025, but the government suspended that order on 24 October after airlines showed no interest, so this is a purely domestic trip with no customs or immigration.

Monsoon rain and cyclone warnings on the coast

June to August are the wettest months at Cox's Bazar, and the coast is exposed to cyclones; more than 50,000 people were moved inland before Cyclone Mocha in 2023. When a storm warning is issued, call Biman before leaving the hotel.

Train to Chattogram, then US-Bangla to Saidpur

One detour avoids the capital: the train from Cox's Bazar to Chattogram, on the line that opened to the public on 1 December 2023, then US-Bangla from Chattogram to Saidpur. It takes far longer, but it works.

Saidpur Airport and the roads north

Saidpur Airport, in Nilphamari district, has handled domestic flights since 1979 and is one of the northernmost airports in Bangladesh. Many passengers walk out and carry straight on by road to Rangpur, Dinajpur, Kurigram, Gaibandha, Lalmonirhat, Panchagarh or Thakurgaon; the far corners need a longer drive.

Work to raise the airport to international standard started in 2018, with 912 acres acquired. The plan doubles the runway to 12,000 ft, and flights to eastern Nepal have been proposed once the upgrade is done.

Saidpur is a railway town whose workshop, founded in 1870, is the largest in Bangladesh. Chini Mosque in Islambagh dates from 1863 and Saidpur Church from 1893. A large Urdu-speaking Bihari community, roughly half the population, lives alongside Bangla speakers, so both languages are heard in the bazaars. Hotels on Airport Road suit a night near the runway, and one in town runs an airport shuttle.
