Flying from Kunming to Dhaka

In short

China Eastern Airlines runs the only nonstop between Kunming Changshui International Airport (KMG) and Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka (DAC). Flight MU2035 uses a Boeing 737-800 for the 1,276 km and takes about 2 hours 50 minutes. Because Changshui is one of China Eastern's hubs, many passengers start elsewhere in China and change in Kunming.

23 kg limit and tight connections at KMG

Economy covers 23 kg in the hold and 7 kg in the cabin. Pack to that limit, since excess is charged at the counter.

A short layover at KMG can be tight. The main terminal covers 548,300 m² and has 66 gates with jet bridges, so walks are long, and passengers arriving from another Chinese city also clear exit formalities in Kunming. A single through ticket on China Eastern protects you if the first flight runs late.

Metro Line 6 to Changshui Terminal 1

The airport lies about 24.5 km north-east of the city in hilly country. Metro Line 6 starts at Tangzixiang, where it meets Line 2, passes East Coach Station, the interchange with Line 3, and ends in a station beneath Terminal 1. The line runs 25.3 km with eight stations from early morning until late evening, a cheap option for anyone near Line 2 or Line 3 and travelling light. With heavy bags, a taxi or ride-hailing car is easier.

Older maps, guidebooks and relatives may still mention Wujiaba. Changshui opened on 28 June 2012 and replaced it, and Wujiaba has since been demolished, so every Dhaka flight now leaves from KMG.

Kunming's 2,103 m altitude and your health

Changshui sits at 2,103 m above sea level. Anyone with a heart or breathing condition who is spending time in Kunming before the flight should ask a doctor about the altitude, and keep medication in the cabin bag.

Landing under an hour after take-off, local time

Dhaka is two hours behind Kunming. China runs on UTC+8 and has not used daylight saving since 1991, while Bangladesh keeps UTC+6, so a flight of under three hours lands less than an hour after its take-off time by the local clocks.

Visa checks for Chinese and other passports

Foreign passport holders, Chinese citizens included, should check Bangladesh's visa rules before flying and carry a passport valid for six months.

Traffic from Kurmitola to Gulshan or Old Dhaka

Hazrat Shahjalal is in Kurmitola, north of the city. Reaching Gulshan or Banani is usually quick, while Motijheel and Old Dhaka can take far longer once evening traffic builds. Use the official taxi kiosk inside the terminal or a ride-hailing app.

The fastest road is the toll expressway, joined near the airport at Kawla. Its first 11.5 km to Farmgate opened in September 2023, a Karwan Bazar ramp followed in March 2024, and the rest is being built towards Kutubkhali near Jatrabari. BRTC launched a bus on it between the airport and Farmgate on 18 September 2023, reasonable with a small bag.

Terminal 3 was partly opened on 7 October 2023 and is due to welcome passengers from a soft opening on 16 December 2026, with full operations in March or April 2027; when finished, the airport can take 24 million passengers a year, three times the present 8 million. For Chattogram or Cox's Bazar, domestic flights leave from the single-storey terminal to the left of the international buildings, where Biman, US-Bangla, Novoair and Air Astra are based.
