Manchester to Sylhet flight guide
Biman Bangladesh Airlines flies nonstop from Manchester Airport (MAN) to Osmani International Airport in Sylhet (ZYL), the only airline on the route. Its Boeing 787-8 covers 8,070 km in about 9 hours 50 minutes, sparing Bangladeshi families in Oldham and Rochdale the long run down the motorway to Heathrow.
Biman restarted the flight in July 2026 after a break of several months, and BG208 runs twice a week. The aircraft continues to Dhaka after the Sylhet stop, so if Sylhet is your destination, make sure your ticket ends there and your bags are tagged ZYL.
The allowance is 46 kg checked and 7 kg in the cabin. Osmani's single 3,120 m runway is long enough for the 787-8; the airfield dates from British rule, when it was built partly with Japanese advances from Burma in mind.
By road, head for the M56; the airport sits about 11 km south-west of the city centre with its own spur road. Allow extra time on Friday evenings and at the start of school holidays. By rail, trains from Manchester Piccadilly take around 20 minutes and run every 10 minutes, and the airport station sits between Terminals 2 and 3. Most of Terminal 1 closed in November 2025, so passengers now use Terminals 2 and 3; read the check-in details on your e-ticket.
On a British passport you need a Bangladesh visa or the No Visa Required (NVR) endorsement for people of Bangladeshi origin, with at least six months left on the passport. A British friend with no Bangladeshi family can get a single-entry visa on arrival for up to 30 days, paid in cash at 51 US dollars or euros, though the officer decides, so an advance visa is safer on a first trip.
Osmani is on the northern edge of the city among the tea gardens. The airport honours General M. A. G. Osmani, who commanded Bangladesh's forces in 1971, and took his name that year after being known as Sylhet Civil Airport. Most arrivals are met by family; hotels on Airport Road in Khadimnagar and at Dargah Gate are a short drive away.
The tomb of Shah Jalal in Dargah Mahalla draws hundreds of visitors a day, with Sylhet's largest mosque beside it and the grey Jalali Kobutor pigeons in the courtyard. His nephew and companion Shah Paran is linked with Khadimnagar on the airport side of town.
Sreemangal, which calls itself the tea capital of Bangladesh and is where layered Seven Color Tea began, is home to the Bangladesh Tea Research Institute. Lawachara National Park on its edge, about 60 km from Sylhet, shelters the country's biggest surviving group of western hoolock gibbons.
Sylhet averages roughly 4,200 mm of rain a year, most of it in the monsoon, so pack a sturdy umbrella in summer. January is the coolest month at about 18.4 °C, with nights near 9.8 °C, which feels cold in houses without heating.
From Osmani, Biman also flies to Jeddah and Madinah, so families can head for Umrah without going via Dhaka.

Getting there
Head for the M56: the airport sits about 11 km south-west of the city centre with its own spur road off the motorway. Allow extra time on Friday evenings and at the start of school holidays, when everyone heading to Sylhet seems to set off at once.
The terminal is small, but the runway is not. Osmani has a single strip of 3,120 m, enough for a widebody such as Biman's 787-8, and the airfield dates from British rule, when it was built partly with Japanese advances from Burma in mind.
Shah Paran, Shah Jalal's nephew and companion, is linked with Khadimnagar on the airport side of Sylhet. One of the hotels under Where to stay is also in Khadimnagar, on Airport Road, so it makes a convenient base for both a late arrival and a visit.
Lawachara National Park, at the edge of Sreemangal, is about 60 km from Sylhet. Sreemangal calls itself the tea capital of Bangladesh, is home to the Bangladesh Tea Research Institute and is where layered Seven Color Tea began. Lawachara shelters the country's biggest surviving group of western hoolock gibbons.
Yes. UK citizens qualify for a single-entry visa on arrival of up to 30 days, paid in cash at 51 US dollars or euros, though the immigration officer decides. A visa issued in advance removes that uncertainty and is the safer choice for a first trip.
Timing & weather
Passengers now use Terminals 2 and 3 only, after most of Terminal 1 closed in November 2025. Biman does not publish a fixed terminal on this page's sources, so read the check-in details on your e-ticket or the airport's live departures board before you leave home.
Add six hours to UK time between late October and late March, and five hours during British Summer Time. Bangladesh sits on UTC+6 all year, so the gap only changes when British clocks move on the last Sunday of March and October.
General
Yes, without going via Dhaka. Biman links Osmani with both Jeddah and Medina, so families can spend time in the village first and then head to Saudi Arabia from the same airport. Doha, Dubai and Sharjah are also on Biman's Sylhet network.
The airport honours General M. A. G. Osmani, who commanded Bangladesh's forces in the 1971 independence war. The airport took his name that year, having previously been known as Sylhet Civil Airport.
Many returning families do. The tomb is in Dargah Mahalla, a short drive from the airport, and draws hundreds of visitors a day. Sylhet's largest mosque stands beside it, and the grey Jalali Kobutor pigeons that flock around the courtyard are said to descend from a pair given to the saint.
Far wetter. Sylhet averages roughly 4,200 mm of rain a year, and most of it falls in the monsoon. Pack a sturdy umbrella and sandals that can cope with flooded lanes in summer.
A light one for evenings. January is Sylhet's coolest month, averaging 18.4 °C, and nights can drop to around 9.8 °C, which feels cold in houses without heating. Daytime is usually mild and dry.
