Flying from Melbourne to Bangkok

In short

Both airlines fly nonstop from Melbourne Airport (MEL) to Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok (BKK): Jetstar and Thai Airways International. The 7,332 km flight takes about 9 hours 40 minutes. It is a popular holiday route, and Bangladeshi students in Victoria use it on trips home via Bangkok.

Thai Airways fares against Jetstar's paid extras

The route mixes full-service and low-cost flying. Thai Airways includes more in the fare, normally a checked bag and meals, with the exact allowance on the booking. Jetstar sells the seat and charges for checked bags, meals and seat choice, so add those when booking and compare the total.

Finnair starts on 25 October 2026. Dates can move, so check the schedule before you book.

For a halal meal on Thai Airways, request a Muslim meal at booking or at least 24 hours before departure through manage-booking. On Jetstar, buy meals online or on board and check the menu for halal options.

SkyBus from Southern Cross to Tullamarine

The airport is at Tullamarine. The SkyBus runs between Southern Cross station and the terminals around the clock, and taxis and ride-share cars are also available.

Airport Rail Link from Suvarnabhumi to Phaya Thai

Flights land at Suvarnabhumi, never Don Mueang. The airport has one main terminal and the SAT-1 satellite concourse, linked by an underground automated train, and lies about 25 km east of central Bangkok.

The Airport Rail Link runs to Phaya Thai in about 27 minutes and meets the BTS Skytrain there; Makkasan station connects with the MRT Blue Line. Metered taxis and Grab cars wait outside arrivals, the easier choice with heavy bags.

Thai e-Visa and the Digital Arrival Card

Bangladeshi passport holders need a Thai e-Visa, applied for online before travel, and every foreign visitor fills in the Thailand Digital Arrival Card within 72 hours before landing; see our Thailand visa page.

Separate tickets onward to Dhaka

The Dhaka flights on Biman, US-Bangla and Thai Airways all leave from Suvarnabhumi (see Bangkok to Dhaka flights). On separate tickets you clear Thai immigration and collect your bag, so the Thai visa is needed even for a short connection. A single Thai Airways ticket, where available, keeps the bag checked through.
