Flying from Sydney to Bangkok

In short

Qantas and Thai Airways International fly nonstop from Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport (SYD) to Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok (BKK). The 7,515 km flight takes about 9 hours 55 minutes, which makes it one of the longest regular flights into Thailand from the south. It suits Australians heading for a Thai holiday and travellers who use Bangkok as a stopover on the way to South Asia or Europe.

Qantas or Thai Airways, both with bags and meals

Both full-service airlines share the route: Qantas, Australia's flag carrier, and Thai Airways International, which runs its whole network from Suvarnabhumi. On both, the economy fare normally includes a checked bag and meals, so the comparison comes down to departure time, aircraft and price. With a flight this long, seat choice and a meal request made in advance matter more than on a short hop.

A Thai ticket has one practical advantage for anyone continuing past Bangkok. Because Suvarnabhumi is Thai Airways' hub, a single booking can carry you on to Phuket, Chiang Mai or other cities in its network with the bag checked through.

Terminal 1 and the train from Sydney Airport

All international flights at Sydney use Terminal 1, which opened in May 1970 and has 25 gates with aerobridges. The airport sits about 9 km south of the central business district, and the Airport Link train runs from the international station to Central and the city stations in about 15 minutes. Sydney has a curfew between 11 pm and 6 am, with only limited movements allowed in the shoulder hours, so departures for Bangkok are scheduled inside the daytime and evening window.

The airport is busy. It handled 42.54 million passengers in 2025, a record 17.17 million of them international, so give yourself time at check-in and security in school holidays.

Suvarnabhumi and its SAT-1 satellite building

Suvarnabhumi opened for international flights on 28 September 2006 and stands about 25 km east of central Bangkok in Samut Prakan province. It handled 62,902,183 passengers in 2025. Some gates are in the SAT-1 satellite building, which opened in stages from September 2023; a driverless underground train links it with the main terminal in about three minutes, so allow for that when you are walking to immigration.

The Airport Rail Link runs to Phaya Thai in about 27 minutes and meets the BTS Skytrain there, and Makkasan station connects to the MRT Blue Line. Metered taxis and Grab wait outside arrivals. If you are heading straight for the coast, Roong Reuang coach line 389 goes from the airport to Pattaya for 130 baht.

Thailand visa check and arrival card

Visa rules for Thailand depend on your passport, so check them on our Thailand visa page before booking. Whatever your nationality, every foreign visitor fills in the Thailand Digital Arrival Card within 72 hours before landing.

Changing for Dhaka and the time difference

Travellers continuing to Bangladesh can pick up the Dhaka flights on Biman, US-Bangla and Thai Airways at the same airport (see Bangkok to Dhaka flights). On separate tickets you clear Thai immigration and check in again.

Eastern Australia is three hours ahead of Thailand, and four hours ahead while daylight saving runs from early October to early April. Thailand does not change its clocks, so an afternoon departure from Sydney lands in Bangkok the same evening local time.
