Abu Dhabi to Chiang Mai flight guide
Abu Dhabi to Chiang Mai is a nonstop Etihad Airways flight of about 6 hours 15 minutes and 4,605 km from Zayed International Airport (AUH) to Chiang Mai International Airport (CNX). It is the only direct Gulf link to northern Thailand, and it brings Etihad's European and Middle Eastern connections straight to Chiang Mai.
As a full-service airline, Etihad normally includes a checked bag, meals and drinks in economy. All its Abu Dhabi flights leave from Terminal A at Zayed International, about 30 km from the city centre. If you are connecting from Europe on one ticket, your bags go through to Chiang Mai and you stay airside.
Coming from the city, allow for the 30 km drive to the airport by taxi or bus and for check-in queues at Terminal A, which serves every airline at Zayed International. Travelling light on the way out leaves room for Chiang Mai's handicrafts, silk and coffee on the way home, as long as they fit your checked allowance.
CNX lies just south-west of the old city, so the airport run is short: about 15 to 20 minutes by taxi or Grab to old-city and Nimman hotels.
Airports of Thailand also lists cheaper options. Shuttle vans leave Gate 12 of the international terminal on three flat-fare routes: A1 to Nimmanhaemin Road, Huay Kaew Road and the moat for 40 baht, A2 to Mahidol Road, the Night Bazaar and the Chang Khlan Road hotels for 40 baht, and A3 to Ring Road 2 for 60 baht. The Yellow and Red city bus lines run from 6 am to 11:30 pm, and red songthaews take passengers door to door. Car rental counters are on the first floor.
All non-Thai nationals must submit the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) online at tdac.immigration.go.th within the three days before arrival. It replaced the paper TM6 form on 1 May 2025 and is not a visa. Visa requirements depend on your passport; see our Thailand visa page and the official Thai e-Visa site.
Have the TDAC confirmation, your onward or return booking and your hotel address ready at the immigration desk, as you may be asked for them.
Thai embassy guidance says TDAC submission opens three days before arrival, so a Monday arrival can be filed from the Friday before. Immigration will not process an arrival without it, and the form can be completed before a Thai visa is issued. File it before you leave for Zayed International, as there is little time once boarding starts.
Thailand is three hours ahead of the UAE (UTC+7 against UTC+4), and neither country changes its clocks. A night departure from Abu Dhabi lands in Chiang Mai in the morning, with the time difference eaten up in the air. Plan a quiet first afternoon.
November to February is the cool season in northern Thailand, with clear days and chilly nights in the hills, and it matches the mild months in Abu Dhabi. The Yi Peng lantern festival in November is the busiest week of the year. Smoke from field burning usually hazes the region from late February to April, and the rains run from about June to October.
Domestic flights and the overnight train run south to Bangkok, and buses go north to Chiang Rai and Pai. If you end your trip in Bangkok, Suvarnabhumi has flights across Asia, such as those on our Bangkok to Dhaka flights page. Our Abu Dhabi to Dhaka flights page covers another Etihad route from AUH.
