Lampang to Bangkok flight guide
Leaving Lampang by air is about as simple as Thai domestic flying gets. The airport sits 2 km south of the centre, the terminal is small, and Thai AirAsia's nonstop to Don Mueang (DMK) covers about 499 km in a little over an hour. It is the only scheduled flight out of Lampang (LPT).
That single route is the thing to plan around. With few departures, a delay on the road or a missed check-in leaves you waiting a long time for the next seat, so arrive around 90 minutes before departure. Thai AirAsia closes check-in 60 minutes before domestic flights. The terminal has a small shop and little else, and the airport shuts in the evening.
A taxi or local driver from a town-centre hotel takes 10 to 15 minutes. There is no meter culture in Lampang, so agree the fare when you book the ride. If you are coming from Wat Phra That Lampang Luang or the Thai Elephant Conservation Center, a car with driver can drop you straight at the terminal. Returning a rental car at the airport is possible; confirm the arrangement with the company.
The flight arrives at Terminal 2 of Don Mueang International Airport, 24 km north of central Bangkok. Take the SRT Red Line from the station across the footbridge to Krung Thep Aphiwat, about 20 minutes, then change to the MRT Blue Line. Airport buses leave from Terminal 1: A1 for Mo Chit, A2 for Victory Monument, A3 for Pratunam and Lumphini Park, A4 for Khao San Road. The public taxi rank is outside Gate 8; expect the meter plus an airport surcharge and tolls.
International connections need care. Lampang flights do not serve Suvarnabhumi, and the free inter-airport shuttle, available to passengers with an onward ticket, can take over an hour in traffic.
Basic Thai AirAsia fares carry a cabin bag only. Lampang's ceramics, including the town's well-known rooster-pattern bowls, are heavy and fragile; if you are bringing some home, buy a checked bag online in advance and pack them in the middle of soft clothing.
Lampang's passenger terminal is the one opened in stages in 2015, partly on 27 September and fully to the public on 22 October. The airfield itself goes back to 7 November 1923.
