Loei to Bangkok flight guide
Most people on the Loei to Bangkok flight are finishing a trip to Chiang Khan or the mountain parks, and the real planning is the drive to the airport. Thai AirAsia flies nonstop from Loei (LOE) to Don Mueang (DMK), about 410 km, in roughly an hour. It is the only airline on the route.
The airport is in Na An, about 5 km south of Loei town, so from a town hotel a taxi or tuk-tuk takes around 10 minutes. From Chiang Khan the road trip is about 50 km and takes 45 minutes to an hour; book a taxi or car with driver the day before, because few are free in the morning. From Phu Kradueng or Dan Sai, add more time again.
The terminal opens for the scheduled flights and closes after the last one, and facilities are basic, so arrive about 90 minutes before departure and eat beforehand. Thai AirAsia's check-in typically closes 45 to 60 minutes ahead; check your booking for the exact cut-off.
Flights land at Terminal 2 of Don Mueang International Airport, 24 km north of the centre. The SRT Red Line station is a footbridge away and reaches Krung Thep Aphiwat in about 20 minutes, where the MRT Blue Line continues into town. Airport buses A1 to A4 cover Mo Chit, Victory Monument, Pratunam and Khao San Road, and metered taxis leave from outside Gate 8.
If you are flying out of Thailand from Suvarnabhumi the same day, remember that Loei flights never go there. A free shuttle connects the airports for passengers with an onward ticket, but traffic can stretch it beyond an hour, and on separate tickets you will collect your bag and check in again.
Loei's markets and Chiang Khan's shops send plenty of travellers home heavier than they arrived. The lowest Thai AirAsia fares include only a cabin bag, so if you flew out without a checked bag, add one online before the return; it costs more at the Loei counter.
Cool-season Sundays and the days after New Year are the busiest for flights back to Bangkok. With a single carrier, it is worth booking the return as soon as your plans are firm.
Loei has had a licensed airport since 13 December 1953. The first temporary airfield was 8 km south-west of the city; today's airport is in Na An subdistrict.

The cheapest fares include a cabin bag only. Buy checked baggage online before you travel; it costs more at the airport.
Small things that save the return trip.
Taxis in Chiang Khan are not waiting on every corner early in the morning. Fix the ride the evening before, and leave the hotel at least two and a half hours before departure.
Loei flights land at Don Mueang only. Crossing to Suvarnabhumi takes an hour or more, so do not book a tight international departure on a separate ticket.
If you flew out on the basic fare, buy a checked bag online before the day. Paying at the Loei counter costs more.
The bus from Loei to Bangkok is a long day or a night on the road; there is no train.
| Mode | Journey time | Total trip time | One-way fare | Operators and timings |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Flight | About 1h | About 3h 30m with transfers | Search fares | Thai AirAsia |
| Bus | Roughly 8 to 10 hours | 10 hours or more | Long-distance buses to Mo Chit (Bangkok Northern Bus Terminal) |
For an onward flight next morning, the Amari Don Muang is linked to the terminals; otherwise hotels near the Red Line or the A-bus routes keep the airport run simple.
