Bangkok to Loei flight guide
Thai AirAsia is the only airline on this route. It flies nonstop from Don Mueang (DMK) to Loei (LOE), about 410 km in a straight line, in roughly an hour. Nok Air has flown to Loei in the past, but Thai AirAsia is the scheduled carrier today.
Few people fly to Loei to stay in Loei town. The airport is the closest one to Chiang Khan, the old timber-house town on the Mekong about 50 km north, and to the national parks of Phu Kradueng, Phu Ruea and Phu Suan Sai. Dan Sai, home of the Phi Ta Khon ghost festival, is also within driving range.
Loei flights leave from Terminal 2 at Don Mueang, the domestic side of Bangkok's low-cost airport. There is no Loei service from Suvarnabhumi. With a single airline, the choice of departure times is narrow and seats on cool-season weekends can run short, so it pays to fix dates early. Thai AirAsia's cheapest fares include cabin baggage only; a trekking pack for Phu Kradueng usually needs a checked bag, which costs less online than at the counter.
Loei Airport is a small one-terminal field in Na An, about 5 km south of town. There is no airport bus. A taxi into Loei takes about 10 minutes, and tuk-tuks wait outside around flight times. For Chiang Khan, a taxi from the arrivals hall takes 45 minutes to an hour; passengers sometimes share one with others from the same flight. Buses and songthaews to Chiang Khan leave from Loei bus station, which means a short ride into town first.
Loei is often called the coldest province in Thailand, and December and January bring chilly mornings and mist in the valleys, which is why Thai visitors pack Chiang Khan and Phu Ruea at New Year. Phu Kradueng's summit trail closes to hikers during the rainy season each year, usually from June to September, so check the park's dates before planning a climb. Phi Ta Khon in Dan Sai falls in June or July on dates set locally each year.
Loei Airport opened on 13 December 1953 and is in Na An subdistrict of Mueang Loei district. In September 2018 the government approved buying another 360 rai of land to enlarge the apron and build a new passenger terminal.
