London to Sylhet flight guide
Biman Bangladesh Airlines is the only airline flying nonstop from London Heathrow (LHR) to Osmani International Airport in Sylhet (ZYL). Its Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner covers 8,018 km in about 9 hours 45 minutes. For a large share of British Bangladeshis, whose families mostly trace their roots to Sylhet, this is simply the flight home.
BG202 runs about four times a week. The 787-8 has 271 seats, and on a route so closely tied to one community they fill fast around school holidays and family weddings. With no other airline flying it nonstop, booking months ahead is sensible.
Economy comes with 46 kg of checked baggage and 7 kg in the cabin, which matters when half the suitcase is gifts for relatives.
Families in the North West or the Midlands can look at Manchester. Biman also flies between Sylhet and Manchester, and the two services do not necessarily run on the same days.
Confirm your Biman terminal on the booking before you leave home. Heathrow Express does not call at Terminal 4; ride it from Paddington to Terminals 2 and 3, a 15-minute trip, then change to the Elizabeth line for the short hop. The Elizabeth line itself serves Terminals 2, 3, 4 and 5 from three stations, with four trains an hour direct to Terminal 4 via Canary Wharf, useful for families in east London. Travel between terminals by rail is free.
A British passport needs either a Bangladesh visa or the No Visa Required (NVR) endorsement, which the Bangladesh High Commission in London issues to people of Bangladeshi origin and their spouses and children. The passport should be valid for at least six months.
Osmani International sits on Airport Road at the northern edge of Sylhet, with tea gardens running up to the perimeter. The drive into Zindabazar or the Dargah Gate area around the shrine of Shah Jalal is short once you clear the airport.
A new terminal is under construction and due in December 2027. It will raise capacity from 600,000 to 2 million passengers a year, with six boarding bridges and 36 check-in counters, so arrivals from London should clear faster once it opens.
For relatives in Dhaka, Air Astra, Novoair and US-Bangla run domestic flights from Osmani. Leave a comfortable gap, since you must collect your 46 kg and clear customs first.
For dry weather, go in winter. November to February is dry, while June is the wettest month and May to September brings most of the year's rain. Summer is when Ratargul swamp forest is flooded, from about May to early October, and boats can be hired at Gowainghat, around 26 km from Sylhet, with permission from the forest office. Jaflong, on the border with Meghalaya about 60 km away, takes roughly two hours by road each way, so plan a full day.
