Flying from Sylhet to London

In short

Biman Bangladesh Airlines is the only carrier flying nonstop from Osmani International Airport in Sylhet (ZYL) to London Heathrow (LHR). Its Boeing 787-8 covers the 8,018 km westbound in about 11 hours 20 minutes. Londoni families heading back after a winter at home, students starting UK courses and parents visiting grandchildren share the same aircraft.

Biman's oldest route and the BG201 nonstop

London was the destination of Biman's first international service, which began in March 1972 with a Boeing 707. Today Heathrow lists Biman to both Dhaka and Sylhet, so the region has its own nonstop. BG201 runs about four times a week.

Dreamliner cabins and the 46 kg allowance

The Dreamliner has 271 seats: 24 in business, set two, two, two, and 247 in economy, set three, three, three. There is no premium economy on this version.

The allowance is 46 kg checked and 7 kg in the cabin. Split the weight across two cases if your ticket allows, so neither is too heavy to lift, and weigh them at home; repacking on the floor at Osmani is nobody's idea of a send-off. Read the UK rules on food from outside the country before packing, as some items are banned at the border. Keep medicines and documents in the cabin bag.

UK visa and student paperwork

Bangladeshi passport holders need a UK visa issued before travel, with a passport valid for at least six months. Students should apply as soon as the university's confirmation and documents are ready, and keep the offer letter in the cabin bag for the UK border. British citizens of Bangladeshi origin simply fly back on their UK passport.

Flying to Manchester instead

Biman also serves Manchester from Osmani, which suits families in Oldham, Bradford or Birmingham. Ask Biman whether a booked ticket can be moved between the two UK airports, since fare rules may differ.

Direct trains to Whitechapel and Brick Lane by terminal

For Whitechapel, Brick Lane and much of Tower Hamlets, the Elizabeth line runs straight through central London without a change. From Terminals 2 and 3 there are six trains an hour, and Terminal 4 has four an hour direct to Abbey Wood via Canary Wharf; Terminal 5 has two an hour to Shenfield via Stratford. Fares to Zone 1 start at £13.90, with Oyster and contactless accepted. Heathrow Express reaches Paddington in about 15 minutes but then needs another train east, awkward with 46 kg.

The Piccadilly line serves all terminal areas and takes around 40 to 50 minutes to central London, stopping at stations the faster trains pass. Black cabs queue outside every terminal. If you land after the trains stop, Heathrow Central bus station between Terminals 2 and 3 is the hub for local buses and long-distance coaches.
