Flying from Paro to Dhaka

In short

Drukair, Bhutan's national airline, is the only carrier flying nonstop from Paro International Airport (PBH) to Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka (DAC). Its ATR 42-600 covers 408 km in about an hour, climbing out of a Himalayan valley and descending over the Bengal delta. The route suits tourists finishing a Bhutan trip, Bhutanese students and business travellers.

KB300 on a 48-seat ATR 42-600

KB300 runs twice a week. The ATR 42-600 is a twin-turboprop with roughly 48 seats in its typical layout, so boarding and getting off take very little time. The first minutes are spent climbing out of the valley before the aircraft turns south.

The listed allowance is 30 kg checked plus a 7 kg cabin bag, generous for a short turboprop sector. Overhead lockers on the ATR are small, so keep the cabin piece compact and soft-sided.

With no competing airline, any alternative means connecting through another city, which turns an hour-long hop into a long day.

Why departures wait for the weather

Paro sits at 2,235 m in a narrow valley ringed by peaks of up to about 5,500 m, and aircraft there operate only in visual conditions between sunrise and sunset. If pilots cannot see the terrain, the ATR waits on the ground, and windy seasons bring extra afternoon limits. Leave slack in any onward plans from Dhaka, above all a same-day international connection on a separate ticket; many travellers choose a night in Dhaka.

Allow time on the mountain road from Thimphu

Paro town is only 6 km from the airport, but Thimphu is about 54 km away on a mountain road. Slow trucks, roadworks or a landslip on the valley road can add time, so people staying in the capital leave with a generous margin.

Same clock in Paro and Dhaka

Bhutan Time and Bangladesh Standard Time are both UTC+6, and neither country uses daylight saving, so your phone reads the same in Paro and Dhaka.

Visa checks for Bhutanese and other travellers

Bangladeshi citizens need only their passport. Bhutanese and other foreign travellers should confirm the current Bangladesh visa position for their nationality with the Bangladesh mission or another official source before travelling.

Immigration and bags in the Terminal 1 and 2 hall

You land in Kurmitola on the northern side of Dhaka. International passengers arrive in the ground-floor hall of the joint Terminal 1 and 2 building, where immigration, baggage and customs are; Terminal 3 is set for a soft opening on 16 December 2026, and the minister expects full operations in March or April 2027.

Uber, Pathao, Obhai and Shohoz pick up from the kerb, or prepay at the taxi kiosk near the international exit. For Farmgate and the centre, ask the driver to join the toll expressway at Kawla, which avoids the slow stretch of Airport Road. Airport railway station, just outside, has trains to other parts of the country.

For Chattogram, Sylhet or Cox's Bazar, the domestic terminal is a separate single-storey building next to the international one. After customs, walk across and check in, leaving a long gap if the tickets are separate, because a cloudy morning in Paro can hold the departure.
