Ranong to Bangkok flight guide
Leaving Ranong by air is simple once you have solved the ride to the airport. Thai AirAsia flies nonstop to Bangkok Don Mueang (DMK), about 510 km, in a little over an hour, and it is the only scheduled route from Ranong Airport.
The airport is in Ratchakrut, around 20 to 25 km south of town, roughly 40 minutes by car. No buses or songthaews serve it, and you cannot count on hailing a taxi on the way, so ask your hotel to book transport the day before or reserve a car with driver. Coming off Koh Phayam or Koh Chang, the boat lands at the piers about 4 km west of town. From May to October, when crossings can be cancelled in rough seas, come back to the mainland the day before your flight.
Arrive about 90 minutes before departure. The terminal is small and quick to clear, but Thai AirAsia closes check-in on time, and there is little or no food inside, so eat beforehand.
Flights from Ranong land at Terminal 2, the domestic building of Don Mueang. Into the city, the Red Line takes about 20 minutes to Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal and connects with the MRT Blue Line. Airport buses A1 to A4 leave from Terminal 1, Level 1, Gate 6, and public taxis run around the clock from the rank on Level 1. If you are connecting to an international flight at Suvarnabhumi, the free inter-airport shuttle is open to passengers with an onward ticket; leave several hours, as the road across Bangkok is slow at peak times.
The cheapest Thai AirAsia fares carry cabin baggage only. If you are bringing back a bigger island bag, add checked baggage online when you book.
Ranong is not on any other domestic route, so if your trip continues to Phuket, Chiang Mai or elsewhere, either connect at Don Mueang or travel by road down the Andaman coast.
Ranong Airport sees little traffic. It handled 131,104 passengers in 2025 and just 889 aircraft movements, and its only route is Thai AirAsia to Don Mueang. The Department of Airports built it between 1993 and 1995; the first arrival was a Boeing 737 carrying 150 passengers.
The terminal, about 4,000 square metres, was designed for 300 passengers. A single 2,000 m concrete runway serves it, and Highway 4 passes between the airport and the hills to the east. There were no international flights as of January 2025. Traffic was higher before the pandemic, with about 170,000 passengers and 2,237 flights in 2019.
Thai AirAsia began flying on 4 February 2004 and has its head office at Don Mueang. Its fleet is all Airbus: A320s, A320neos and the larger 236-seat A321neo. Thailand's Asia Aviation owns about 55 percent of the airline and Malaysia's AirAsia about 45 percent.
You land at Thailand's main low-cost airport. Don Mueang opened as a Royal Thai Air Force base in 1914, took its first airline flight in 1924, and handled 31.65 million passengers in 2025, 19.4 million of them domestic. Nok Air and Thai Lion Air are based there too, so onward domestic seats are plentiful if you are continuing beyond Bangkok.
