Bangkok to Ranong flight guide
Ranong has a single scheduled air link: Thai AirAsia from Bangkok Don Mueang (DMK). The 510 km flight takes a little over an hour and brings you to a small airport about 20 to 25 km south of Ranong town, on the Andaman coast close to the Myanmar border.
Most people on the plane are heading for the islands. Boats to Koh Phayam and Ranong's Koh Chang leave from the piers about 4 km west of town, and the speedboat to Koh Phayam takes 40 to 45 minutes. Others come for the hot springs in Ranong itself. Either way, the important part of the trip happens after landing, because Ranong Airport has no buses or songthaews. Book a car with driver, ask your hotel for a pickup, or take one of the taxis that usually wait for the flight, agreeing the fare and destination before you load your bags. If you are going straight to the islands, have the driver head for the pier rather than detouring through town.
Thai AirAsia flies to Ranong from Terminal 2 at Don Mueang. There is no Ranong service from Suvarnabhumi; international arrivals there can use the free shuttle to Don Mueang if they hold an onward ticket. The Red Line from Krung Thep Aphiwat, about 20 minutes, is the most predictable way from the city to the airport.
Thai AirAsia's promotional fares include cabin baggage only. Island trips tend to need a proper bag, so add it online when you book; the counter price is higher.
Ranong is one of the wettest places in Thailand. The May to October monsoon brings heavy rain, and boats to Koh Phayam and Koh Chang run less often and can be cancelled in rough seas. December to April is the reliable season for the islands. If you fly in during the rains, keep a night in Ranong town as a fallback.
Ranong Airport (UNN) is a small Department of Airports field in Ratchakrut subdistrict, south of town. Construction started on 30 March 1993 and finished on 18 May 1995, and the first aircraft to land was a Boeing 737 with 150 passengers on board. It has one 2,000 m concrete runway.
The main terminal covers about 4,000 square metres and was designed for 300 passengers at a time. In 2025 it handled 131,104 passengers on 889 aircraft movements, up about 8 percent on the year before; in 2019, before the pandemic, the airport saw around 170,000 passengers on 2,237 flights. As of January 2025 no international flights operated, so the closeness to Myanmar does not bring a cross-border air link.
Leaving the airport, you join Highway 4, which passes between the airport and the hills to the east.
Thai AirAsia is the only airline at Ranong. It began flying in February 2004, keeps its head office at Don Mueang, and in August 2025 had 62 Airbus aircraft: A320-200s with 180 seats, A320neos with 186 and A321neos with 236. The company is about 55 percent owned by Thailand's Asia Aviation and 45 percent by Malaysia's AirAsia group.
Don Mueang, where you board, opened as an air force base in 1914 and handled 31.65 million passengers in 2025.
