Roi Et to Bangkok flight guide
Flying from Roi Et to Bangkok means one airline and one arrival airport: Thai AirAsia flies nonstop to Don Mueang (DMK), about 419 km away, in roughly an hour. There is no service to Suvarnabhumi, so anyone connecting to an international flight there needs to build in the cross-town transfer.
Leaving Roi Et is unhurried. Roi Et Airport is on Highway 2044 in Thawat Buri district, 15 to 25 minutes by car from Bueng Phalanchai in the centre of town. With no airport bus, ask your hotel to book a taxi or arrange a car with driver the day before. Arrive about 90 minutes before departure: check-in, security and the gate share a single floor, and Thai AirAsia closes bag drop 60 minutes before the flight. We could not confirm food outlets in the terminal, so eat in town first.
Flights arrive at Terminal 2, the domestic side of Don Mueang, about 24 km north of central Bangkok. The quickest way into town at busy times is the SRT Dark Red Line from the station across the footbridge: around 20 minutes to Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal, where you change to the MRT Blue Line. Airport buses A1 and A2 run to BTS Mo Chit and Victory Monument, A3 to Pratunam and Lumphini Park, and A4 to Khao San Road. Public taxis leave from Level 1 at Gate 8; you pay the meter plus an airport fee and any expressway tolls.
If your next flight leaves from Suvarnabhumi, the free inter-airport shuttle runs from Don Mueang for passengers with an onward ticket. Road time between the two airports changes a lot with traffic, so leave a wide margin on separate tickets and avoid pairing a long-haul departure with a tight arrival from Roi Et.
Basic Thai AirAsia fares cover cabin bags only. If you are bringing back produce or gifts from Isan, add checked baggage online when you book rather than paying at the counter, where it costs more.
Roi Et Airport opened to passengers on 2 March 1999, after four years of construction on an old Royal Thai Army airfield in Nong Phok subdistrict, Thawat Buri. The Department of Airports runs it. Departures and arrivals share one floor in a 3,013 square metre terminal, and aircraft use a single 2,100 m runway.
Traffic is modest. The airport counted 342,970 passengers in 2024, while aircraft movements that year rose by about 84 percent to 3,989. Capacity is well ahead of demand since an expansion completed in December 2022 lifted it to 1.2 million passengers a year. For a few months the airport had a second Bangkok link: Thai Smile flew daily to Suvarnabhumi from January to September 2022, and since that service ended every flight has gone to Don Mueang.
Don Mueang International Airport is owned by the Royal Thai Air Force and operated by Airports of Thailand. It opened as an air base in 1914 and received its first commercial flight in 1924. In 2025 it handled 31.65 million passengers, of whom 19.4 million flew domestically, and it is the operating base for Thai AirAsia, Nok Air and Thai Lion Air. With all the low-cost airlines based there, an onward domestic flight from Don Mueang is easy to find.
Your aircraft will be an Airbus from the Thai AirAsia fleet, which in August 2025 numbered 62 jets of the A320 and A321neo families. The airline began flying in February 2004 and keeps its head office at Don Mueang.

Small things that save time on the way to Bangkok.
There is no public transport to Roi Et Airport. Ask your hotel to reserve a taxi, or book a car with driver, so you are not hunting for a ride on the morning of the flight.
Bangkok's roads clog at peak times. The Dark Red Line runs from the station beside the terminals and connects to the MRT Blue Line for most of the city.
Don Mueang and Suvarnabhumi are on opposite sides of Bangkok. Use the free shuttle if you hold an onward ticket, and give yourself several hours.
Most travellers stay near their next connection: along the BTS and MRT lines in central Bangkok, or close to Don Mueang before an early onward flight.

Getting there
About 90 minutes before departure. The terminal is small and quick to clear, but Thai AirAsia closes bag drop 60 minutes before the flight.
By taxi or a pre-booked car, 15 to 25 minutes along Highway 2044. There is no airport bus, so arrange the ride through your hotel the day before.
About an hour for the 419 km. Allow extra time on the Bangkok side for the trip from Don Mueang into the city, which ranges from 20 minutes by train to well over an hour by road at peak times.
Terminal 2, the domestic building. It is joined to Terminal 1, the international side, by an indoor walkway.
Route A4, which runs via Democracy Monument to Khao San Road and Sanam Luang. The fare is a flat charge paid on board, and luggage space is limited.
Several hours. The two airports are on opposite sides of Bangkok, and the road between them is slow at peak times. On separate tickets, plan a generous gap and check in again at Suvarnabhumi.
We could not verify any food outlets in the terminal. Eat in town before you leave for the airport and carry water.
Not by Bangkok standards. It handled about 343,000 passengers in 2024, and check-in, security and the gate all sit on one floor, so queues are short.
General
No. Every Roi Et flight goes to Don Mueang. For Suvarnabhumi, take the free inter-airport shuttle (with an onward ticket) or a taxi across the city.
At busy times, the SRT Dark Red Line. Trains leave from the station across the footbridge and reach Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal in about 20 minutes, where you change to the MRT Blue Line.
Use the public taxi rank on Level 1, take a queue slip and check the meter is running. The airport fee and expressway tolls are paid on top. Ignore offers inside the hall and never get into a car with white number plates.
