Bangkok to Roi Et flight guide
Roi Et has one air link with the capital: Thai AirAsia, and every departure leaves from Don Mueang (DMK), not Suvarnabhumi. The flight covers about 419 km in a straight line and takes about an hour, landing at a small single-route airport 15 to 25 minutes by car from the town centre.
Roi Et sits in the middle of Isan, and the airport draws passengers from neighbouring Maha Sarakham, Kalasin and Yasothon as well as from the town itself. Because it has just this one scheduled route, the only decision is which Thai AirAsia departure from Don Mueang suits your day. If you arrive in Thailand at Suvarnabhumi, you have to cross Bangkok first. A free shuttle runs between the two airports for passengers holding an onward ticket, but leave several hours for the transfer and the second check-in.
Domestic flights use Terminal 2. Coming from the city, the SRT Dark Red Line stops across a footbridge from the terminals and takes about 20 minutes from Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal, which is steadier at rush hour than the expressway.
Thai AirAsia's cheapest fares cover cabin baggage only. If you travel with a suitcase, add checked baggage when you book; it is normally cheaper online than at the counter. Bag drop at Roi Et closes 60 minutes before departure, and Don Mueang's domestic queues can be long in the morning peak, so allow time at both ends.
The Roi Et Airport terminal is on one level, with baggage reclaim a few steps from the exit. It stands on Highway 2044 in Thawat Buri district, north-east of town. There is no airport bus or rail link, so take one of the taxis waiting for the flight and agree the fare before setting off, or book a car in advance. Carry baht in cash, since drivers expect it.
The cool, dry months from November to February are the most comfortable time to visit Isan. March to May brings fierce heat, and the rainy season runs from about May to October. In town, Bueng Phalanchai, the lake with its island park at the centre of Roi Et, is the natural first stop.
Roi Et Airport (ROI) is a Department of Airports field on land that was once a Royal Thai Army airstrip, about 11 km from downtown Roi Et. Building work ran from 1995 to 1999 and the first civil flights arrived on 2 March 1999. Its single runway is 2,100 m long.
The airport has grown in steps. A 110 million baht grant in 2020 raised its annual capacity to 750,000 passengers, and an expansion finished in December 2022 took that to 1.2 million. Actual traffic is far lower: 342,970 passengers in 2024. The terminal covers 3,013 square metres, and the 85 by 324 m apron is built for Boeing 737 and Airbus A320 jets.
Suvarnabhumi did have a Roi Et service for a while. Thai Smile flew daily between the two from January 2022 until September 2022, then dropped it, which left Don Mueang as the only Bangkok link.
Thai AirAsia has its head office at Don Mueang and has flown since February 2004. Its fleet in August 2025 was 62 aircraft: 44 Airbus A320-200s with 180 seats, 11 A320neos with 186 seats and seven A321neos with 236 seats. The airline is owned about 55 percent by Thailand's Asia Aviation and 45 percent by Malaysia's AirAsia group.

Thai AirAsia is the only airline on the route, and it flies from Don Mueang only. There are no flights from Suvarnabhumi to Roi Et.
The lowest Thai AirAsia fares include cabin baggage only. Add a checked bag when you book and read the fare rules before paying.
Three things that make this trip easier.
Roi Et flights leave from Terminal 2 at Don Mueang. If you land internationally at Suvarnabhumi, use the free inter-airport shuttle and allow several hours for the transfer.
There is no bus from Roi Et Airport. Taxis meet the flights but drift away once the passengers have gone, so pre-book a car if your flight might run late.
Thai AirAsia closes bag drop at Roi Et an hour before departure. The drive from town is short, so leaving your hotel 90 minutes before the flight is plenty.

Sixty minutes before departure for Thai AirAsia. This matters on the way back to Bangkok, so leave town about 90 minutes before your flight.
Yes. Many passengers come from those neighbouring provinces. A car with driver booked in advance is the easiest way to continue there, since there is no public transport from the terminal.
In Thawat Buri district, on Highway 2044, north-east of Roi Et town. It opened to civil flights in 1999 on the site of a much older army airfield.
