Udon Thani to Hat Yai flight guide
Getting from the North-East to the far south normally means a change in Bangkok. The exception is Thai Lion Air's nonstop from Udon Thani (UTH) to Hat Yai (HDY): about 1,191 km in a straight line and about two hours in the air. The airline flies it on selected days only, not daily, so check your dates in the search before planning anything around it.
At Udon Thani airport, 90 minutes before departure is usually plenty. The airport keeps roughly 06:00 to 22:00 hours and is small enough to cross in a few minutes. There is a paid Coral lounge in Terminal 2, but the better food is landside, in the first-floor buffet restaurant.
Thai Lion Air sells several fare types, and the baggage allowance changes with each. Look at the inclusions on the booking page, and if you need more weight, add it online before the day.
Hat Yai International Airport lies 10 to 12 km south-west of the city. Transport is well organised:
Change money at the bank counter or an ATM rather than at transport booths, where rates are poor. Songkhla and Samila Beach are about 45 minutes away by car, and the Sadao crossing into Malaysia is roughly an hour south.
Hat Yai's wettest months are usually October to December, when heavy rain can slow the airport road. January to April is drier. Whenever you land, set aside an evening for the city's food: Hat Yai fried chicken, dim sum and the night markets are reasons in themselves to stay a night.
Udon Thani's airport has been in use since 1932. It belongs to the Royal Thai Air Force, and the Department of Airports manages the civil terminal. In the Vietnam War years it was Udorn Royal Thai Air Force Base, an American front-line base and the Asian headquarters of Air America. Alpha Jets of the air force's 231 Squadron still share the 3,048 m runway.
The airport handled 2,012,155 passengers in 2025 and 475 tonnes of freight.
Thai Lion Air, part of Indonesia's Lion Air Group, flew its first service on 4 December 2013 and is based at Don Mueang. It operates only Boeing 737s, 28 in August 2025, split between the 737-800 and the 737-900ER. From Udon Thani it flies to Don Mueang, Hat Yai and U-Tapao, and from Hat Yai it also serves Don Mueang.
Hat Yai International Airport, run by Airports of Thailand, carried 3,305,661 passengers in 2025, up 6.7 percent. The terminal was designed for 2.5 million passengers a year and passed 4.5 million in 2018; plans aim to lift capacity beyond 10 million by 2030. The airport is about 43 km from Songkhla city, is reached by Highway 4135, and has a 3,150 m runway. Other domestic routes from Hat Yai include Thai AirAsia to Chiang Mai, Bangkok Airways to Phuket and EZY Airlines to Betong and Hua Hin.

Thai Lion Air is the only airline flying this sector nonstop, and it does not run every day.
The baggage allowance depends on the fare type. Check the inclusions and add weight online if you need it.
Three pointers for the flight south.
Because the nonstop runs on selected days, fix the flight first and build hotels around it. If the days do not work, two flights via Don Mueang are the alternative.
Transport booths in arrivals will change cash, but at poor rates. The bank counter and ATMs near the arrivals hall give a better deal.
Heading on to Songkhla, Satun or the border? The city minibus finishes at Hat Yai Bus Terminal, so you avoid paying for a taxi twice.
By land, Udon Thani to Hat Yai means changing in Bangkok and well over a day on trains or buses. The nonstop flight takes about two hours.

General
Hat Yai city and the airport are not covered by the UK's advice against all but essential travel, but several districts further south and the provinces of Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat are. Read your own government's advice before travelling beyond Hat Yai.
Hat Yai fried chicken, dim sum and whatever the night markets are cooking. Kim Yong Market and the streets near the clock tower are good places to start.
What's included
That depends on the fare type you choose. Check the inclusions before you pay and add extra weight online rather than at the airport.
