Białystok travel guide
Branicki Palace, Orthodox domes and milk-bar kartacze
The largest city in north-eastern Poland, with Branicki Palace, Orthodox churches and easy access to the Białowieża Forest. May to September is best. One or two days, plus time for the forests. Poland's Schengen rules give many visitors 90 days without a visa.
Białystok is the main city of north-eastern Poland, about 200 km from Warsaw near the Belarus border. Forest covers almost a fifth of the city. Podlasie's mix of Catholic and Orthodox churches gives it a different feel from cities further west.
Branicki Palace, rebuilt after wartime bombing and now part of the Medical University, earned the nickname Versailles of Podlasie for its scale and formal gardens. From there walk past the Kościuszko market square and along Lipowa, lined with 19th-century facades, to the Orthodox Cathedral of St Nicholas. Ludwik Zamenhof, creator of Esperanto, grew up here. A cultural centre named after him tells his story.
The Memorial Museum of Siberia covers Poles deported to the Soviet Union during the war. To eat, find a milk bar such as Podlasiak or Słoneczny, and order kartacze, the region's big potato dumplings stuffed with meat. Żubr beer and Żubrówka vodka take their names from the bison of the Białowieża Forest, the obvious nature trip from here.

Getting there
Via Warsaw or Kaunas
Białystok has no scheduled airport, so most visitors fly into Warsaw Chopin, about 200 km south-west, and take bus 175 into Warsaw for a PKP Intercity train north-east; some coaches run direct from the airport. Budget flights also reach Kaunas in Lithuania, 240 km away, with fewer direct trains and buses.
- Train from Warsaw
- About 2 to 2.5 hours, with departures from early morning until late evening
- Bus 175
- Warsaw Chopin airport to central Warsaw for the train
- Direct coach
- From Warsaw Chopin with some operators, book in advance
- From Kaunas
- 240 km; a few direct trains or a bus
- The train from Warsaw is the cheapest option and runs all day, so you rarely need to book it far ahead.
Where to stay
Around Rynek Kościuszki
Stay in Białystok's compact centre, around Rynek Kościuszki, and you can walk to nearly every sight. Hotels range from big names such as the Branicki and the Gołębiewski down to hostel dorms, so every budget is covered.
- Around the Kościuszko market square
- Walk to the palace, Lipowa and the cathedral; the busiest choice of cafés
- Lipowa and Warszawska
- Rows of intact 19th-century houses, quieter in the evening
- Near the station
- Handy for trains and coaches, with snack bars open late but little to look at
Getting around
Dense streets, punch-on-board buses

- Buses
- The main reason to ride is the palaces of Dojlidy in the south-east
- On foot
- Branicki Palace, the market square, Lipowa and the Orthodox cathedral lie along one short walk
- City Stadium
- Jagiellonia's ground, 2 km south of the centre
- Kebab and zapiekanka stands by the railway and bus stations stay open 24 hours if you arrive late.

Weather in Białystok, month by month
Białystok's January highs hover near 0°C; July and August reach about 24°C. July is the wettest month at about 87 mm.

Branicki Palace, Lipowa street and the Siberia Museum
Open a day in Białystok at Branicki Palace, the 18th-century residence of the family that once owned the town, and walk its formal gardens. Follow Lipowa west past 19th-century houses to the Orthodox Cathedral of St Nicholas, lunch at a milk bar such as Podlasiak, and spend the afternoon at the Memorial Museum of Siberia.
Walk the formal gardens first, then the rebuilt interiors. From the gate, the Kościuszko market square is a few minutes away.
Follow Lipowa west past its 19th-century houses to the Orthodox Cathedral of St Nicholas, then find the pale pink palace that served the Prussian administration in the years after 1795 and is now the King Sigismund Augustus high school; Ludwik Zamenhof studied there, and so did Ignacy Hryniewiecki, who killed Tsar Alexander II with a bomb in 1881.
Lunch at a milk bar such as Podlasiak, then spend the afternoon at the Memorial Museum of Siberia on Węglowa, which tells the story of Polish citizens deported to the USSR; allow two hours, and note it is closed on Mondays. If there is a home game, Jagiellonia play in the top division at the City Stadium. End with a Żubr in one of the centre's pubs, and keep the next day for the bison of Białowieża.
Kartacze, milk bars and bison-grass vodka
Podlasie cooks heavy, potato-based food built for long winters. Order kartacze, big oval potato dumplings stuffed with minced meat and served with fried onion and crackling, or babka ziemniaczana, a baked potato cake, at milk bars such as Podlasiak and Słoneczny. Drink Żubr beer or Żubrówka bison-grass vodka.
For dessert, look for sękacz, the tall, knobbly layer cake baked on a spit.
Milk bars are the cheapest way to eat it all. Podlasiak and Słoneczny are both in the centre, and Słoneczny is unusual in serving beer. Topolanka on Wasilkowska, a little north of the centre, draws a mixed crowd of students, families and office workers.
To drink, order Żubr, the beer named after the bison of Białowieża, or Żubrówka, the vodka flavoured with a blade of bison grass. Pubs in the centre pour both.
