Kielce travel guide
A bishops' palace, a quarry amphitheatre and the Holy Cross hills
A regional capital in the Holy Cross Mountains, with a 17th-century bishops' palace and a city park in an old quarry. May to September suits walking in the hills. Spend a day in town and a day or two on Chęciny castle, the Raj cave and Łysa Góra. Prices are moderate, and Schengen rules give many passports 90 days.
Kielce is the capital of the Świętokrzyskie region, set among the low, forested Holy Cross Mountains in south-central Poland. Limestone quarries and metal ores made its money, and for centuries the town belonged to the bishops of Kraków, whose palace is still its finest building. Most travellers use it as a base for the castles and caves around it rather than as a destination in itself.
The Palace of the Kraków Bishops on plac Zamkowy dates from the 17th century and is now the main branch of the National Museum, with furnished period rooms (closed on Mondays). The cathedral stands beside it. From there, walk down Sienkiewicza, the long pedestrian street, then on to Kadzielnia. This former limestone quarry is now a park with an amphitheatre cut into the rock, where summer concerts are staged.
Outside the city, Chęciny castle stands on a ridge to the south-west. The Raj cave nearby is lined with dripstone and can only be seen on guided tours. East of Kielce lies the Świętokrzyski National Park, where a trail climbs through beech and fir forest to the Holy Cross monastery on Łysa Góra. The city has a darker chapter too: in 1946, a year after the war ended, a pogrom here killed about 40 Jewish Holocaust survivors.

Month by month, so you can pick the weather and the crowds you want.
Highs of 19-25°C for the Łysa Góra trail and open-air nights at Kadzielnia; July is the wettest month at about 94 mm, so carry a shell.
Highs hover around 1-3°C with frosty nights, so the bishops' palace, the Toy Museum and the Historical Museum carry a visit.
Targi Kielce, the city's trade fair grounds, holds large shows through the year; check its calendar, as fair weeks fill the hotels.

Getting there
Kraków-Balice flights, then the line through Kielce station
No civil airport serves Kielce. Kraków-Balice, about 120 km south, is closest, with trains or coaches north from Kraków; Warsaw Chopin, about 180 km away, has the most flights. Kielce is off the fastest lines, so trains are slow. The station is at the bottom of Sienkiewicza, and coaches use the round 1970s bus station called the UFO.
- Train from Kraków
- About 1 hour 30 minutes on the quickest services
- Train from Warsaw
- About 2 hours 15 minutes
- Train from Katowice or Częstochowa
- About 2 hours
- Train from Lublin
- About 2 hours 30 minutes
- Check which class of train you are booking: slower regional services can add an hour to the quickest times.
Where to stay
Sienkiewicza hotels or a room by plac Zamkowy
Kielce's centre is a strip about a kilometre long, from the station up Sienkiewicza to the palace and plac Zamkowy, and that is where to sleep, unless a trade fair at the Targi Kielce grounds or a car points you elsewhere.
- Sienkiewicza, station end
- Business hotels such as the Grand facing the station; best for train arrivals, with the palace a 15-minute walk
- Plac Zamkowy and the Rynek
- Quieter lanes beside the palace and cathedral, closest to the museums, with fewer large hotels
- Aleja Solidarności
- Bigger modern conference hotels such as the Kongresowy, further out and better with a car
- Near Kadzielnia
- Handy for concerts at the amphitheatre, a walk south of the centre, though choice is thin
Getting around
Sienkiewicza on foot, Chęciny and Łysa Góra by car
Within Kielce you hardly need transport: the station, Sienkiewicza, the Rynek, the palace and Kadzielnia sit along one walkable line. City buses run to the estates and the trade fair grounds. For Chęciny, the Raj cave, the Tokarnia village museum and Świętokrzyski National Park, hire a car, because regional buses eat most of a day.
- On foot
- Station to the bishops' palace along Sienkiewicza in about 15-20 minutes; Kadzielnia a short walk south
- City buses
- Cover the outer districts and Targi Kielce; validate on boarding
- Car
- The easy way to combine Chęciny, the Raj cave, Tokarnia and Łysa Góra in one or two days
- The Raj cave admits small timed groups, so fix that slot first and fit the castle and the skansen around it.

Weather in Kielce, month by month
Kielce's July and August highs reach about 25°C, and January's about 1°C. July is the wettest month at about 94 mm, February the driest at about 34 mm.

The Bishops' Palace, Kadzielnia quarry and Chęciny castle
Start at the Palace of the Kraków Bishops when it opens, at 09:00 on most days and 11:00 on Tuesdays and Fridays, closed Mondays, for its furnished rooms, then see the cathedral beside it. After lunch, walk the Municipal Park and Sienkiewicza to the Kadzielnia quarry. Give day two to Chęciny castle and the Raj cave.
Cross to Zamkowa for the Institute of Design, which took over a renovated jail, then walk down to the Rynek and the Historical Museum of Kielce on Świętego Leonarda.
After lunch, stroll through the Municipal Park below the palace, walk the length of Sienkiewicza, and then turn south to Kadzielnia. The quarry walls frame the amphitheatre, and on summer evenings a concert there is the best night out in town. Families can swap the Historical Museum for the Toy Museum on plac Wolności.
Give the second day to the hills. Drive about 15 km south-west to Chęciny, climb to the ruined castle for the view along the ridge, and keep your booked slot at the Raj cave nearby, whose dripstone chambers are shown on short guided tours. Leave time for the open-air village museum at Tokarnia on the same side of Kielce, or head east instead into the Świętokrzyski National Park and walk up through the fir forest to the Holy Cross monastery on Łysa Góra.
Zalewajka, prażoki and a jar of Kielecki mayonnaise
The Holy Cross hills were poor farming country, and Kielce's food shows it. Order zalewajka, a sour potato soup made with fermented rye starter, and prażoki, potato and flour dumplings with fried pork fat. Sienkiewicza has most cafés and restaurants, and Kielecki mayonnaise, made in the city, is the best-known food export.
Pierogi and żurek are as common here as anywhere in Poland.
Sienkiewicza is where most visitors eat: the pedestrian stretch has cafés, pubs and restaurants with outdoor tables from spring, and the lanes around the Rynek hold a few quieter places.
Kielecki mayonnaise, made in the city since the 1950s, is the brand most Poles reach for at Easter, when it coats hard-boiled eggs and vegetable salad. Any supermarket sells it, and a jar makes a cheap souvenir for Polish friends who will recognise the label at once.

Poland applies the Schengen area's entry rules. Citizens of the EU and of many other countries, including the US, UK, Canada and Australia, can visit visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period; other nationalities need a Schengen visa. The EU's Entry/Exit System (EES) records non-EU travelers' fingerprints and a photo at the border.
Health & safety
Crime against visitors to Poland is low. Watch for pickpockets in busy tourist areas and overpriced bars that target tourists.
