Zielona Góra travel guide
Vineyard hills, the Winobranie festival and a palm house café
Western Poland's wine city, with vineyards on the surrounding hills and the Winobranie festival every September. Go in late spring, summer or festival week, and give it one or two days. Schengen rules apply, with 90 visa-free days for many passports.
Zielona Góra, the largest city of Lubusz in western Poland, has grown grapes since the Middle Ages, which makes it the odd one out in a beer-drinking country. The name means Green Mountain. The hills around town still carry vineyards, replanted after the old state winery went bankrupt in the early 1990s.
Wine is the reason to come, and September is the time. The Winobranie festival takes over the old town for nine days in the first half of the month, with stalls, parades and concerts. Outside festival week, climb the Wine Park hill for the view west over the city, then visit the Wine Museum inside the Regional Museum, which shares a building with a rather grim museum of torture.
Expect a university city with cheap pizzerias, a 15th-century town hall and a Palm House on Wrocławska Street where you can eat lunch among tropical plants. Sunday afternoons in season belong to Falubaz, one of the strongest speedway clubs in Poland.

Getting there
Babimost Airport, Rzepin and the Frankfurt (Oder) Change
Zielona Góra's airport at Babimost, about 40 km away, has LOT flights only to Warsaw plus summer charters, so most visitors come by rail from Wrocław, Poznań, Szczecin or Warsaw. From Berlin, change once at the border, at Frankfurt (Oder), Kostrzyn or Rzepin. The station is about ten minutes on foot from the old town.

Where to stay
Konstytucji 3 Maja, Ceglana or Ogrodowa
Zielona Góra has only a handful of hotels, on Konstytucji 3 Maja, Ceglana and Ogrodowa, all within walking distance or a short bus ride of the Rynek. Winobranie, the September wine festival, sells rooms out quickly, so book early for it.
- Konstytucji 3 Maja
- Hotel within walking distance of the Rynek, best for Winobranie evenings, though you hear the festival until late
- Ceglana
- A 56-room business hotel, mostly single rooms, so a good fit for solo travellers
- Ogrodowa, south of the centre
- A clean hostel in a residential street, quiet at night and the cheapest bed in town, but a bus or a longer walk from the station

Know before you go
What makes Zielona Góra worth the trip, and what catches visitors out.
Why travelers love it
- Winobranie in September, when the old town turns into one long wine stall.
- The Palm House, a glass greenhouse with a restaurant on top of the Wine Park.
- Falubaz speedway, one of the top clubs in Poland, usually racing on Sundays.
Good to know
- Local beer outsells local wine in most bars, so ask for Lubusz wine by name.
- The Regional Museum and the Palm House both close on Mondays, so keep that day for the old town and the vineyard hills.

Weather in Zielona Góra, month by month
Zielona Góra's July highs reach about 25°C and January's about 2°C. July is the wettest month at about 90 mm, April the driest at about 31 mm.

From the town hall to the Palmiarnia over a weekend
Spend the first morning in Zielona Góra at the 15th-century town hall on the Rynek and the Co-Cathedral of St Hedwig, counting the little bronze Bacchus figures along the way. In the afternoon climb the Wine Park hill to the Palmiarnia palm house for the view, and give the second morning to the Botanical Garden.
Keep an eye out on these streets for the little bronze Bacchus figures the town has scattered about. Late morning, head for the Regional Museum on Niepodległości (open Tuesday to Sunday). Its Wine Museum tells how the trade faded once the railway brought in cheaper wine from elsewhere in Germany, collapsed in the communist years and has now come back, and the torture museum next door is a strange but memorable counterpoint.
In the afternoon, climb the Wine Park hill for the view across the western half of the city and take a coffee or an early dinner among the palms at the Palmiarnia, closed on Mondays. The Chapel in the Vineyards on Aliny is close by. Evening options are a concert at the Tadeusz Baird Philharmonic or a glass of local wine in the old town.
Spend the second morning at the Botanical Garden on Botaniczna, and if Falubaz have a home meeting on Wrocławska, give the afternoon to speedway. Otherwise, take a long lunch and catch the train out.
Lubusz wine, milk-bar pierogi and Jazzgot
Zielona Góra is the only Polish city that makes a fuss about wine. Lubusz whites and light reds come from the slopes around town, so ask for them by name in old-town restaurants. For a cheap meal, the Turysta milk bar on Bolesława Chrobrego serves pierogi, and students keep the old-town pizzerias and bars busy.
During Winobranie the Rynek fills with producers' stalls and you can taste your way round the square.
For a cheap, filling meal, the Turysta milk bar on Bolesława Chrobrego, opposite the station, is the local favourite for a cheap lunch, the kind of canteen where you order pierogi or a bowl of żurek at the counter from a menu on the wall. It shuts on Sundays and closes in the late afternoon.
The student population keeps a string of pizzerias busy in the old town, and they are the easiest late dinner. Jazzgot on Niepodległości, near the museum, opens early for breakfast and stays open until midnight. For a meal with a setting, book the restaurant in the Palm House, where tables sit among tropical plants on top of the Wine Park.
