Włocławek travel guide
A Gothic cathedral, the Vistula dam and Kuyavian forests
A Vistula river city in Kuyavia with one of Poland's oldest dioceses and a large Gothic cathedral, plus forest walks in the landscape park next door. Visit May to September; half a day to a day is plenty. Many passports need no visa for 90 days under Schengen rules.
Włocławek lies on the Vistula in eastern Kuyavia, between Toruń downstream and Płock upstream. It was the region's chief town in the Middle Ages and has been a bishop's seat since the 12th century, which explains the scale of its Gothic cathedral, now listed as a Historic Monument of Poland. Today it is a working city of about 98,000, and most visits are short.
Just upstream, a dam holds back the river to form the Włocławek Reservoir and Poland's largest run-of-river hydroelectric plant. The forests and lakes of the Gostynin-Włocławek Landscape Park begin at the edge of town, and they are the better reason to linger on a summer day. The city also turns out faience pottery and a well-known brand of ketchup. In winter, home games of Anwil, one of the country's most successful basketball clubs, are the liveliest nights out.

The Assumption Cathedral, the Vistula embankment and the Włocławek dam
Start at the Gothic Cathedral of the Assumption, a Historic Monument of Poland, and find the red marble tomb of Bishop Piotr of Bnin. Walk down to the Vistula embankment in late morning, and in the afternoon head upstream to the dam that holds back the Włocławek Reservoir.
Inside, look for the red marble tomb of Bishop Piotr of Bnin, carved by Veit Stoss, the sculptor of the great altarpiece in Kraków's St Mary's.
The river is wide here, and the view up and down it explains why this was Kuyavia's main town in the Middle Ages. Then visit the regional museum to see Włocławek faience, the hand-painted glazed pottery that has been made in the city for well over a century.
Afternoon. Head upstream to the dam that holds back the Włocławek Reservoir and feeds Poland's largest run-of-river hydroelectric plant. On the right bank nearby, a monumental cross remembers Father Jerzy Popiełuszko, the Solidarity priest whose body was thrown into the reservoir here by secret police officers in 1984; it is a quiet, affecting place. With a car and good weather, finish with a forest walk in the Gostynin-Włocławek Landscape Park, or drive on downstream to Toruń for the evening.
Ketchup, faience and where to eat in Włocławek
Włocławek is an industrial city, and its two famous food links are factory products: a national ketchup brand long made here, and the painted faience pottery the town is known for. For a meal, stay near the centre and the river, and in summer take a picnic to the reservoir or the Gostynin-Włocławek forests.
One is ketchup: a national brand has long been made here, and Poles still associate the city's name with the bottle. The other is faience. The patterned plates and bowls produced here since the 19th century are as much a part of the table as the food on them, and the workshops still turn out new pieces.
Restaurants in the streets around the cathedral serve the Polish standards: żurek, pierogi, pork schabowy with potatoes and cabbage, and placki ziemniaczane. A zapiekanka, the toasted open baguette with mushrooms and cheese, is the cheap lunch, and here it seems only right to add ketchup.
In summer, take a picnic out to the reservoir or the forests of the landscape park, where there are few places to buy food. If you want a wider choice for dinner, Toruń downstream has a far bigger restaurant scene and makes a sensible base.
