Płock travel guide
An 11th-century capital on a Vistula cliff, with castle, cathedral and riverside walks
A former royal capital on a high Vistula bank with a Gothic castle, a cathedral of Polish rulers and long cliff-top walks. Visit from May to September and give it a day or two. Many nationalities enter Poland under Schengen rules with 90 visa-free days.
Płock stands on a high bank above the Vistula in central Poland, about two hours from Warsaw by bus, and for a few decades from 1079 it was the capital of the whole country. That early importance survives on Cathedral Hill, where the castle of the Masovian dukes faces a cathedral holding the sarcophagi of Polish rulers.
The rest of the town is more modest. Poland's oldest school still teaches here, the biggest oil refinery in the country works on the edge of town, and the Mariavite Church runs its worldwide headquarters from Płock. The Masovian Museum on Tumska has a fine collection of early 20th-century furniture and painting.
Give yourself time for the river. From the town hall, head south to the promenade along the cliff, then either stay on top for long views or take the steps down to the sandy bluffs below. Sunset is the hour to do it.

Where to stay
Rooms near Tumska and Cathedral Hill
Płock's Old Town is small, and anywhere within a few streets of Cathedral Hill and Tumska puts the cliff walk on your doorstep. Hotels are few and fill up on summer weekends, so book ahead, especially for July and August.
- Piekarska and the Old Town
- Hotel Tumski is the four-star choice, a short walk from the cathedral and Stary Rynek; best for a first visit
- Tumska
- The main pedestrian street leading down to the hill, with cafés below; can be noisy on weekend nights
- Aleja Jachowicza
- Hotel Petropol, the former state-run Orbis hotel, bigger and more business-like, a little out of the old centre
- Near the bus and train stations
- Handy for an early coach, but about 3 km from the sights

Royal sarcophagi, the Masovian Museum and a Vistula sunset
Take an early coach from Warsaw to Płock and walk down Tumska, the long pedestrian street, to Cathedral Hill, where the cathedral's Royal Chapel holds the sarcophagi of Polish rulers. At midday see the Art Nouveau collection of the Masovian Museum, visit the Museum of Masovian Jews, and end on the promenade above the Vistula at sunset.
Go into the cathedral first. The Royal Chapel holds the sarcophagi of Władysław Herman and his son Bolesław Wrymouth, rulers from the decades when Płock was the capital, and the bronze Płock Door at the entrance is a cast of the 12th-century original now in Novgorod. Then cross to the castle of the Masovian dukes, which stares straight back at the cathedral from the cliff edge.
Midday. The Masovian Museum at Tumska 8 has an outstanding Art Nouveau and Art Deco collection; give it an hour and a half before lunch around Stary Rynek.
Afternoon. Walk to the Museum of Masovian Jews on Kwiatka, housed in the old synagogue, then back to the town hall on Stary Rynek.
Evening. Head south from the town hall to the promenade. Stay on top heading west for the long view up the Vistula, or take the steps down and walk the foot of the cliff past the sandy outcrops. Time it for sunset, when the river turns copper below the hill.
Zapiekanki on Tumska and Stary Rynek dinners in Płock
Płock is no food destination, but it does the zapiekanka well: half a baguette baked with mushrooms and cheese, sold from stands along Tumska. For a sit-down meal, the squares and lanes around Stary Rynek have the restaurants, and the best table is a takeaway eaten on the cliff-top promenade over the Vistula.
Stands selling them are scattered through the centre, especially along Tumska, and one makes a quick lunch between museums. Kebab counters are just as common, as in every Polish town.
For a sit-down meal, the squares and lanes around Stary Rynek have the restaurants, and in summer their tables spill outside. Order the dishes you will find across Masovia: żurek served in a bread bowl, pierogi with meat or cabbage, and placki ziemniaczane, crisp potato pancakes, sometimes topped with goulash. Hotel Tumski on Piekarska has a restaurant if the square is full.
The best table in town is not a restaurant at all. Buy something from a bakery or a stand, carry it to the cliff-top promenade south of the town hall and eat watching the Vistula. Cafés along Tumska are the place for coffee and cake when the wind off the river makes that less appealing.

The Royal Chapel holds the sarcophagi of Władysław Herman and Bolesław Wrymouth, who ruled when Płock was the capital between 1079 and 1138.
No. The 12th-century original ended up in St Sophia's Cathedral in Novgorod; Płock has a faithful cast at the cathedral entrance.
Start at the town hall on Stary Rynek and head south to the promenade. Walk west along the top for views, or take the steps down for the path beneath the sandy cliffs.
It has lions, small monkeys, crocodiles and sea turtles, and opens daily from 9:00; check the zoo's site for longer summer hours. Some enclosures are cramped, so animal lovers may leave disappointed.
The Mariavites, a small church that broke from Rome in the early 20th century, have their worldwide headquarters in Płock.
Yes. Buses on the Warsaw to Toruń corridor link the two several times a day, so Włocławek's cathedral fits into a day on the way to Toruń.

Visa & documents
Poland applies the Schengen area's entry rules. Citizens of the EU and of many other countries, including the US, UK, Canada and Australia, can visit visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period; other nationalities need a Schengen visa. The EU's Entry/Exit System (EES) records non-EU travelers' fingerprints and a photo at the border.
Health & safety
Crime against visitors to Poland is low. Watch for pickpockets in busy tourist areas and overpriced bars that target tourists.
