Zabrze travel guide
Underground mine tours, a brick water tower and Górnik football
An industrial city west of Katowice where you can tour real coal mines underground at Guido and the Queen Louisa Adit. Come between May and September, book the mine tours in advance and allow a full day. Many nationalities need no visa for 90 days in Schengen Poland.
Zabrze sits on the western side of the Silesian conurbation, a 20-minute train ride from Katowice, and people come here for one thing above all: coal. The old mine complex is a Historic Monument of Poland, and two of its sites let you go underground in a hard hat rather than look at displays behind glass.
Guido Mine is the headline act. Miners needed three attempts from 1856 before they hit a workable seam 170 m down, because the rock here is broken up by faults, and the deepest route now goes down to 320 m, which the museum bills as the lowest tourist route in Europe. Book a timed slot in advance, and check the age limits if you are bringing children. The Queen Louisa Adit is the second branch, where the underground visit includes a boat trip along an old drainage tunnel.
Above ground the town is spread out and plain, a former German steel town that carried the name Hindenburg until 1945. Climb the 46 m red-brick water tower, now the Carboneum, for a look over the rooftops. Save an evening for Górnik Zabrze at Arena Zabrze, home ground of one of Poland's most decorated football clubs.

Weekend slots at Guido Mine go first, so reserve a few days ahead in summer and on Górnik match days.

Getting there
M16 airport bus and the Gliwice line
From Katowice-Pyrzowice airport, metropolitan bus M16/M116 reaches Zabrze in about 75 minutes. Kraków airport has no direct link, so ride into Kraków and take a train west via Katowice. Stopping trains between Katowice and Gliwice run every 20 minutes and take about 20 minutes, and some Wrocław and Berlin trains stop too.
- Bus M16/M116
- Katowice airport to Zabrze in about 75 minutes, no change
- Train from Katowice
- Every 20 minutes, about 20 minutes to the central station
- Coaches
- Flixbus at Rondo Sybiraków, Sindbad at Plac Warszawski
- Tram from Bytom
- Lines 2 and 5, handy from the north but slow from Chorzów
- The railway station is central but has few facilities, so buy water and snacks before you board.
- Some long-distance coaches skip Zabrze entirely; if yours does, get off in Katowice and take the train.
Where to stay
Wolności strip or Jagiellońska hotels
Most visitors sleep in Katowice and come to Zabrze for the day, but staying makes an early Guido Mine slot or a late Górnik match easier. Rooms cluster on the Wolności strip and around Jagiellońska, both within reach of the station.
- Wolności by the station
- Serviced apartments sleeping six to eight, good for families and groups, with restaurants and pubs on the doorstep; expect noise on weekend nights
- Jagiellońska
- A chain hotel and a conference hotel south of the centre, quieter and reliable, but a tram or bus ride from the eating strip
- Katowice
- The fallback if Zabrze is booked out, 20 minutes away by train with far more choice
Getting around
Plac Wolności trams and the 2024 interchange
Zabrze straggles, with sights a few kilometres apart, so ride at least once. ZTM trams and buses use the same ticket as Katowice across some forty towns. Plac Wolności is the tram hub for lines 1, 3, 4 and 5, and city buses start from the interchange 200 m west of the station, opened in 2024.
- Plac Wolności
- Transfers between tram lines 1, 3, 4 and 5
- Bus interchange
- 200 m west of the station, hub for local routes
- Metrorower
- Bike-share across the metropolis, with a few dozen docks in Zabrze
- Guido Mine and the Coal Mining Museum are both on 3 Maja, so walk between them.
Know before you go
What makes Zabrze worth the trip, and what catches visitors out.
Why travelers love it
- Guido Mine, where the tour drops you into working galleries far below the street.
- The Carboneum water tower, with a coal exhibition, a restaurant and a viewing deck at the top.
- Military Technology Museum, a yard of tanks and guns, much of it still in running order.
Good to know
- Underground tours need booking and are hard going for anyone with limited mobility; check the age limits before bringing young children.
- Wear sturdy shoes at the military museum, where the outdoor ground turns to mud after rain.

Guido Mine, the Carboneum and a Górnik evening
Zabrze is a day of coal heritage from Katowice. Take an early train and start at the Coal Mining Museum on 3 Maja, then go underground at Guido Mine, booking ahead. Have a late lunch at the top of the Carboneum water tower, and in the evening watch Górnik Zabrze at home with up to 28,500 fans.
Take an early train from Katowice and walk to the Coal Mining Museum at 3 Maja 19, where an hour of maps, lamps and models explains why a seam suitable for coke, found in 1791, turned a forest village into a steel town. Then follow the same street out to Guido Mine at number 93 for your booked underground slot. This is the part you will remember: the cage drops, the air cools and the guides show where the faults defeated two earlier shafts.
Surface for a late lunch at the top of the Carboneum on Zamoyskiego, the 46 m brick water tower restored in 2022, and take in the view across the pitheads and housing estates. If the weather has been dry, spend the afternoon among the tanks at the Military Technology Museum on Mochnackiego instead. Before dinner, look into St Anne's, the red-brick neo-Gothic church at 3 Maja 18.
Evenings have two directions. If Górnik are at home, join up to 28,500 fans at Arena Zabrze beside the Botanic Gardens. Otherwise, check the programme at Teatr Nowy, the Art Nouveau former steelworks casino on Plac Teatralny, or the Philharmonic hall directly behind it.
Rolada, kluski and the Wolności strip
Silesian home cooking in Zabrze is heavy and built for miners coming off a shift. The Sunday classic is rolada, beef rolled round bacon, gherkin and onion, served with thumb-dented kluski śląskie dumplings and red cabbage. Wolności, a block north of the station, is the restaurant strip, and Van Pur brews beer in town.
Look also for żurek, a sour rye soup often served with sausage and egg, and krupnioki, the local blood-and-groats sausage, usually grilled. Lunch menus in workaday restaurants are the best place to try them.
For everything else, head to Wolności a block north of the station, the town's eating street. In a few hundred metres you pass Akira Sushi, the Italian-leaning Sorrento and Mąka & Oliwa, then Calavera, Happy Star, Gruby Benek and Skrzydlaty Byk. None of it is Silesian, but it is where locals go on a Friday night. The pubs cluster nearby, just north of the tracks.
Beer here is local in a quiet way. Van Pur brews on Wolności south of the station; it runs no tours, but its labels turn up in most bars. The restaurant at the top of the Carboneum is the one table in town with a view.
