Dąbrowa Górnicza travel guide
Pogoria lakes, a training mine and a baroque hilltop church
A former coal town on the eastern edge of the Katowice conurbation, with a mining museum, a real practice adit and swimming lakes. Come June to August for the Pogoria lakes; half a day covers the sights, one night if you want a quiet base. Costs are moderate, and Schengen rules apply.
Dąbrowa Górnicza sits on the eastern side of the Katowice conurbation in southern Poland, on the Czarna and Biała Przemsza rivers, and gave its name to the old Dąbrowa Basin coalfield. The last mines closed in the 1990s. Today people come mostly for the Pogoria lakes, flooded sand pits a short ride from the centre that fill with swimmers and small sailing boats in July.
The mining past is the real sight. Sztygarka Museum occupies the former school where mine foremen and metallurgists trained, and a short walk north takes you into its practice adit, the horizontal tunnel where students learned the trade. St Barbara's church, named for the miners' patron saint, faces the museum. For something older, climb the knoll on the east side to St Anthony's, a baroque church from 1678 still attached to a working monastery.
Evenings centre on Plac Wolności, where the Culture Palace holds a gallery, a theatre and a cinema, and on the blocks around Pogoria shopping centre. Food here is ordinary. For a proper Silesian lunch, Katowice is about 30 minutes away by regional train, so treat Dąbrowa as a half-day stop or a quiet lakeside base.

The Sztygarka museum, the basilica and the Pogoria lakes
Take a regional train from Katowice to Dąbrowa Górnicza's main station and walk to the Sztygarka Museum on Legionów Polskich, in the old mining school, for the story of coal and zinc. At midday ride the tram to the basilica on Królowej Jadwigi, and in summer spend the afternoon at the Pogoria lakes.
It tells how coal, a zinc plant of 1823 and a steelworks of 1834 turned a string of villages in an oak forest into a town. Then walk about 100 m north to the Ćwiczebna mine, the horizontal practice tunnel where students learned to cut coal. St Barbara's church, named for the miners' patron and built in 1885, stands opposite the museum.
Midday. Catch a tram to Królowej Jadwigi for the Basilica of Our Lady of the Angels, a heavy neo-Gothic church finished in 1912. If you prefer older stones, go instead to St Anthony's on its knoll in the east, a baroque church of 1678 with a working monastery.
Out of season, finish on Plac Wolności, where the Culture Palace has a gallery, or take the tram 5 km west to Będzin Castle.
Plac Wolności cafés, Sunday rolada and lunch before Pogoria
Dąbrowa Górnicza is no food destination. Eating places cluster around the Pogoria shopping centre and the cafés of Plac Wolności, and the plate to order is the regional Sunday rolada, a beef roll with dumplings and red cabbage. For a lake day, eat before you go or bring a picnic, as lakeside facilities are limited.
The first is the blocks around Pogoria shopping centre, where you find pizza, kebab and a handful of Polish restaurants, plus the town's pubs. The second is around Plac Wolności and the Culture Palace, the better choice for coffee and cake before an evening at the theatre or cinema.
Order what the wider region cooks. A Sunday-style plate of rolada, a beef roll with kluski (soft potato dumplings with a dimple for the gravy) and red cabbage, turns up on menus all over the conurbation, as do żurek and pierogi. Note that Dąbrowa belongs to Zagłębie, historically part of Lesser Poland and not Silesia, and people here are quick to point out the difference from their neighbours across the Brynica river, even if the plates look much the same.
For a lake day, eat before you go or bring a picnic, as facilities by the water vary from shore to shore. If you want a proper restaurant dinner, Katowice is half an hour away by regional train and has far more choice.
