Opole travel guide
The Piast Tower, a canal-side old town and Poland's song festival
A walkable Oder River city with Piast-era churches, a canal-side old town and the National Festival of Polish Song, usually in June. Best from May to September; one or two days is about right. Many passports visit Poland visa-free for up to 90 days.
Opole straddles the Oder in southern Poland, halfway between Wrocław and Katowice, and it is far older than the coal towns to the east. A Slavic stronghold stood here in the 8th century, and the Piast dukes of Opole ruled from it for three hundred years. Today it is a compact university city and the capital of its province.
Start at the Piast Tower, the only piece of the ducal castle left standing. German officials ordered the castle demolished in 1928 to make room for government offices, and only protests from the Polish minority saved the tower, which now rises between modernist blocks. Nearby, the Franciscan Holy Trinity Church holds the tombs of the Piast dukes.
Most years in early or mid June, the National Festival of Polish Song fills the Millennium Amphitheatre, as it has since 1963. Away from festival week, walk the Młynówka canal, where old houses stand right on the water, and look up at the town hall tower, rebuilt in 1936 to echo the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence.

Getting there
aeroBUS Transfers and Fast Trains to Opole Główne
Opole has no airport; Wrocław and Katowice are nearest, and the aeroBUS door-to-door transfer covers both. Most people come by rail to Opole Główne, on the main line between Wrocław and Upper Silesia, at the southern edge of the old town. Coaches are strong too, since Sindbad, a major coach firm, is based here.
- Wrocław
- About 45 minutes by the fastest train
- Katowice
- About 1 hour 15 minutes
- Kraków
- About 2 hours 25 minutes
- Warsaw
- About 3 hours direct
- Drivers reach Opole on the A4 motorway from both Wrocław and Katowice.
- Use the PKP Intercity timetable to compare train classes; the fast trains save a lot of time on the Kraków and Warsaw runs.
Where to stay
Station Hostel, Rynek Hotels or the DeSilva
Opole is small enough that almost anywhere central is walkable, so choose by price and quiet: a hostel by the station, hotels on or near the Rynek, or the DeSilva for more comfort. Rooms by the Młynówka canal put Pasieka island on your doorstep.
- Opole Główne
- A hostel inside the station building, with ensuite rooms, dorm beds and a café; ideal for a single night between trains, less so for atmosphere
- Old town
- Mid-range hotels such as the Best Western Opole Centrum, a few minutes from the Rynek and the Młynówka, though rooms fill fast in June
- DeSilva Premium
- Opole's first large four-star hotel, with a gym and a cigar bar, aimed at business travellers and couples wanting more comfort
Getting around
MZK Buses, Pasieka Footbridges and No Bike-Share
Opole's old town, the Młynówka canal, Pasieka island and the Piast Tower are all within a 15-minute walk. For the zoo on Bolko island or the outer districts, use MZK Opole buses, with 45-minute single tickets or a 24-hour pass; the city no longer has bike-share, and a route app beats the machine-translated website.
- MZK buses
- Single, 45-minute and 24-hour tickets
- Footbridges
- Cross the Młynówka from the old town to Pasieka island
- Cycling
- No bike-share since 2021; the only rental is on the outskirts
- Do not bother hiring a bike; the rental shop is hard to reach and the centre is easier on foot.
Know before you go
What makes Opole worth the trip, and what catches visitors out.
Why travelers love it
- The Piast Tower, the 14th-century survivor of a castle that was torn down in 1928.
- The Młynówka canal, lined with houses that seem to rise out of the water.
- Sopelek ice cream, a local chain whose sundaes are built on a heroic scale.
Good to know
- Festival week in June is the busiest time; rooms sell out early.
- The town hall is a working office, so you admire it mainly from the Rynek rather than inside.

Weather in Opole, month by month
Opole's July and August highs reach about 26°C, and January's about 3°C. July is the wettest month at about 89 mm, February the driest at about 29 mm.
Climate figures are approximate long-term averages for Opole (Institute of Meteorology and Water Management, via Wikipedia).
From the Rynek to the Piast Tower on Pasieka island
Walk north from Opole Główne to the Rynek first, where the town hall tower was rebuilt in 1936 on the model of Florence's Palazzo Vecchio, and see the Franciscan Holy Trinity Church a block away. After lunch, cross the Groszowy footbridge to Pasieka island and the Piast Tower, and on day two visit the zoo on Bolko island.
A block away, the Franciscan Holy Trinity Church dates from the 14th century and shelters the chapel and tombs of the Piast dukes. Climb next to the Church on the Hill, dedicated to the Sorrowful Mother of God and St Adalbert; locals use the short name because the full one is a mouthful.
After lunch, cross the Groszowy footbridge over the Młynówka canal to Pasieka island and the Piast Tower, the stump of the castle begun in 1228, standing among the modernist government offices that replaced it. Walk the canal bank at dusk, when the houses on the water look their best, and finish with dinner in the old town.
On day two, take the bus to the zoo on Bolko island, or a river cruise on the Oder if the boats are running. In June, try for a concert at the Millennium Amphitheatre; the rest of the year, the Opole Philharmonic is the evening's best bet. Leave room for an oversized Sopelek dessert before the train.
Manekin pancakes, Sopelek sundaes and Silesian kołocz in Opole
Opole's food is cheerful, and two local favourites shape most visits: Manekin, a pancake and crêpe house on one of the prettiest old-town corners, and Sopelek, the city's own ice-cream chain known for its sundaes. Bakeries sell kołocz, the Silesian yeast cake, as across the rest of the region.
The first is Manekin, a branch of the national chain of pancake and crêpe houses, which occupies one of the busiest and prettiest corners of the old town. Portions of sweet and savoury naleśniki are large and prices low, so expect a queue at peak times and do not over-order.
The second is Sopelek, the city's own ice-cream chain, which made its name with towering sundaes and dessert plates big enough to share. It also sells simple cones to take away. Its branches on Krakowska, on Spychalskiego and in the Solaris Center shopping mall mean there is usually one on your route.
Opole Silesia shares its cooking with the rest of the region. Bakeries sell kołocz śląski, the protected Silesian yeast cake with cheese, poppy-seed or apple filling and a crumb topping, and restaurant lunch menus run to sour żur soup and Sunday roulades with dumplings. Students keep a good supply of cheap bars and pizzerias busy around the Rynek, which is also where you will find most outdoor tables in summer.

Visa & documents
Poland applies the Schengen area's entry rules. Citizens of the EU and of many other countries, including the US, UK, Canada and Australia, can visit visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period; other nationalities need a Schengen visa. The EU's Entry/Exit System (EES) records non-EU travelers' fingerprints and a photo at the border.
Health & safety
Crime against visitors to Poland is low. Watch for pickpockets in busy tourist areas and overpriced bars that target tourists.
