Bydgoszcz travel guide
Mill Island museums, Brda granaries and a man on a wire
A big river city between Gdańsk and Poznań, with well-preserved 19th-century streets, Mill Island museums and Opera Nova on the Brda. May to September is best. One or two days, often combined with Toruń. Many passports enter Poland visa-free for 90 days under Schengen rules.
Bydgoszcz lies where the Brda flows into the Vistula, roughly midway between Gdańsk and Poznań. It came through the war with most of its 19th-century and early 20th-century streets intact. The Bydgoszcz Canal, dug in the late 18th century, turned it into an industrial river town. The waterfront is still the best part.
Mill Island (Wyspa Młyńska), in the middle of the Brda, holds a cluster of museums named after the painter Leon Wyczółkowski; go at least for the modern art. Across the water, old timber granaries on Grodzka house more galleries, and above the river a figure balances on a wire, a sculpture put up in 2004 when Poland joined the EU. Opera Nova sits on the bank close by.
Away from the river, look for the neo-Gothic main post office on Jagiellońska and the Basilica of St Vincent de Paul, a giant domed church modelled on the Pantheon. The Land Forces Museum has a yard full of tanks and rockets, and the Exploseum hides a wartime explosives factory in the forest. Toruń is 40 minutes away by train.

Rail hub with bigger airports nearby
Bydgoszcz's Paderewski Airport, about 3.5 km from the centre, has a short list of routes, mostly Ryanair to Britain and Ireland plus LOT to Warsaw and Lufthansa to Frankfurt. Many travellers land in Poznań, Gdańsk or Warsaw and finish by train to Bydgoszcz Główna, which also has a train to Berlin.

- From Bydgoszcz Główna it is about 2 km to the Brda and the Old Town, so take a short tram ride unless you fancy the walk.
- Flying into Gdańsk and taking the train is often simpler than waiting for a flight into BZG.
Where to stay
Brda banks, Old Market and Gdańska
Stay in Bydgoszcz's Old Town or on the banks of the Brda, near the Old Market and Mill Island, so most sights are a few minutes away and the river is on your doorstep in the evening. Gdańska street, the main avenue, has more hotels.
- Old Market Square
- Restaurants on the square and the river a block away; weekend noise from bars
- Along the Brda near Mill Island
- The best views and evening walks, close to Opera Nova and the granaries
- Śródmieście around Gdańska
- Grand 19th-century streets with trams north to the Land Forces Museum and the botanic garden
- By the main station
- The youth hostel on Sowińskiego rents good-value double rooms to all ages, close to the station
Getting around
Trams, buses, bikes and the water tram
Bydgoszcz's buses and trams reach every district: buy tickets at newsstands or machines and punch them on board, or tap a card on the machine and show the card to inspectors. ROOVEE city bikes, standard and electric, rent through an app, and a summer water tram runs on the Brda.
- On foot
- Old Market Square, Mill Island, the granaries and Opera Nova are within ten minutes of each other
- Trams
- Along Gdańska toward the Land Forces Museum and the parks to the north
- Water tram
- Summer sightseeing boat on the Brda
- Some drivers in the centre take corners fast, so look twice before stepping off the kerb even on a green light.

A day on the Brda in Bydgoszcz
A day on the Brda covers Bydgoszcz. Start on the Old Market Square, walk to the river to find the bronze man on a wire by the bridge, and cross to Mill Island for its museums. Lunch at Karczma Młyńska, then take a tram up Gdańska to the Land Forces Museum or visit the Exploseum.
Cross to Mill Island and spend the late morning in the Wyczółkowski museums, making sure you see the modern art galleries. The granaries on Grodzka, built at the end of the 18th century, hold the gallery of Leon Wyczółkowski's own work.
Lunch at Karczma Młyńska, which serves traditional Polish dishes in an old-fashioned room right on the canal. Afterwards, walk past Opera Nova and out along Jagiellońska to the neo-Gothic main post office, one of the largest in Poland, then continue to the Basilica of St Vincent de Paul by the parks.
In the afternoon, take a tram up Gdańska to the Land Forces Museum and its outdoor yard of tanks and rockets, or head for the Exploseum in the forest. Come back for an evening at Opera Nova or a drink by the river. With a second day, take the 40-minute train to Toruń.
Canal-side kitchens, tea rooms and late bars
Bydgoszcz has no signature dish, so choose by setting. The Old Market Square holds the densest run of restaurants at fair prices, Karczma Młyńska serves Polish cooking in an old-fashioned room on Mill Island, Herbaciarnia Asia on Wełniany Rynek makes tea, and Kredens is a local favourite for a drink.
For Polish cooking with a sense of occasion, Karczma Młyńska on Mennica sits right on the canal. Dolce Vita on Podwale cooks proper Italian food, not delivery-style pizza, and Sowa on Mostowa, just off the square, mixes Italian and Polish menus.
For something warm on a cold afternoon, Herbaciarnia Asia on Wełniany Rynek makes tea and real hot chocolate to go, with a tiny tea room in the lane that drops down to the river.
Evenings follow the water and the square. Local favourites include Kredens and Grandmother's Pub, and there are bars along the riverbank. One rule catches visitors out: within the city boundary, shops cannot sell alcohol between 23:00 and 06:00, although bars and restaurants keep serving.
