Koszalin travel guide
Gothic cathedral, Góra Chełmska and the bus to Mielno beach
Central Pomerania's main town sits 12 km from the Baltic, with a Gothic cathedral, a walkable old centre and a direct bus to the beach at Mielno. June to August is the season; a day covers the town itself. Poland applies Schengen rules, with 90 days visa-free for many passports.
Twelve kilometres inland from the Baltic, Koszalin is the largest town in Central Pomerania and a stop on the railway between Szczecin and Gdańsk. Most visitors pass straight through on the way to the beach at Mielno. Give it a morning first: the old centre is small enough to walk, and Góra Chełmska, the wooded hill on the eastern side, has a pilgrimage church and a lookout tower.
Start at the Gothic cathedral on Bolesława Chrobrego, seat of the Koszalin-Kołobrzeg diocese, then follow what is left of the medieval wall along Marii Ludwiki. The former post office on Andersa, a neo-Gothic complex from 1884, is the handsomest building in town. Museum of Koszalin on Młyńska covers regional history and is shut on Mondays.
For the sea, bus 1 leaves from outside the train station for Mielno and Unieście, where the beach runs along a narrow spit between Lake Jamno and the open Baltic. Private minibuses wait at the same stop, and in the summer season Polregio trains run to the Mielno Koszalińskie stop. July and August weekends are packed, so go early.

Koszalin's cathedral, the old walls and an afternoon on the Jamno spit
Cross the Dzierżęcinka from Koszalin station to the Gothic cathedral, then stroll to Rynek Staromiejski and along Marii Ludwiki past a surviving stretch of the medieval walls. In the afternoon take bus 1 to Mielno and the spit between Lake Jamno and the Baltic, and back in town climb Góra Chełmska for the view at dusk.
Look in at the little Chapel of St Gertrude on Modrzejewskiej before the Museum of Koszalin on Młyńska, which needs about an hour for the region's history. On the way back, detour to Andersa to see the 1884 post office, a neo-Gothic complex that is the best building in town.
Afternoon. Return to the station and take bus 1 or a private minibus to Mielno. Walk out onto the spit: the open Baltic is on one side, the wide, shallow Lake Jamno on the other. Swim if the water allows, or walk east along the sand to Unieście.
Evening. Back in town, climb Góra Chełmska on the eastern side for the view from the lookout tower near the pilgrimage church, then finish with a concert at the amphitheatre park on Piastowska if one is on.
Fried flounder in Mielno and smoked Baltic fish near Koszalin
The best meals around Koszalin come from the sea, eaten on the coast. Along the seafront in Mielno and Unieście, summer smażalnie, fish-fry shacks, sell Baltic flounder and cod by weight, fried to order, and smoked fish is sold nearby. In town, restaurants around Rynek Staromiejski serve Polish standards year-round.
Choose the fish from the counter and pay for what it weighs. Smoked fish stalls are just as common: buy a hot-smoked mackerel or a piece of halibut, wrapped in paper, and eat it on the dunes.
Look for żurek, pierogi and pork schabowy, and in season soups made with forest mushrooms from the Pomeranian woods. Lunch menus on weekdays are the best value.
Out of season most of the coastal shacks shut, so between October and April eat in Koszalin itself. In summer, go early: by 14:00 the queues at the popular fish fryers in Mielno can stretch along the pavement.
