Gorzów Wielkopolski travel guide
Warta riverbank, a symbolic old-town fountain and speedway nights
A Warta River city in western Poland with a compact centre, a cathedral and forests on both sides, best seen from May to September during the speedway season. One day is enough. Many nationalities get 90 visa-free days under Schengen rules.
Gorzów Wielkopolski sits on the Warta River in western Poland. Until 1945 it was the German town of Landsberg an der Warthe, and today it shares the job of provincial capital with Zielona Góra. Most visitors pass through between Berlin, Szczecin and Poznań, and stop for a day of town walking and forest air.
On the Stary Rynek, the 1897 Paucksch Fountain repays a close look. A woman carrying buckets stands for the town's workers, and the three children at her feet stand for industry, fishing and river shipping. The brick Cathedral of St Mary is close by. Walk on to see the last 130 m of the 14th-century town wall.
Speedway is the local passion, and Stal Gorzów race nights draw big crowds. To the north, the Barlinek-Gorzów Landscape Park covers the Gorzów Woods, with the Noteć Woods to the southeast.

Getting there
S3 Expressway, Ostbahn Trains and the Bus Station Next Door
No airport serves Gorzów directly, so most visitors fly into Poznań, Szczecin or Berlin and finish by train or bus. Gorzów lies on the old Ostbahn line from Berlin, usually with a change at Kostrzyn, but buses are often quicker for Polish cities. The bus and rail stations are side by side, ten minutes from the Stary Rynek.
- Railway station
- About 10 minutes on foot from the Stary Rynek
- From Zielona Góra
- Direct trains in 2 to 2.5 hours
- Bus station
- Next to the railway station, domestic and international routes
- By car
- S3 expressway between Szczecin and Zielona Góra
- Compare bus and train before booking; a direct coach often beats a train with a change.
- Parking in the centre is tight, so use a hotel car park if you drive.
Where to stay
Obotrycka Pubs, Qubus Rooms or Student Dorms
Gorzów has several hotels but no hotel district, and the centre is small, so anywhere near the Stary Rynek or the stations works on foot. Obotrycka has pubs nearby, the Qubus is the main business hotel, and student dorms rent rooms in summer.
- Around the Stary Rynek
- Closest to the cathedral, the fountain and the bars on Obotrycka; lively on weekend nights
- Qubus on Orląt Lwowskich
- A business-style chain hotel within walking distance of the centre; suits business travellers and drivers
- Student dorms
- The cheapest beds in town, plain and best for budget travellers; ask about availability, which depends on the academic year
Getting around
Gorzów Trams, MZK Buses and the Warta Boulevard
Everything a day visitor needs in Gorzów is a short walk apart: the station, the Stary Rynek, the cathedral, the wall and the Warta embankment. MZK runs trams and buses to the outer districts; validate tickets on boarding. For the forests north and south-east of the city, a car helps, as buses to trailheads are sparse.
- MZK trams and buses
- Single tickets, reduced fares and a 7-day pass
- Warta boulevard
- Riverside promenade below the old town
- Forests
- Easiest by car or bike
- A couple of single tickets cover a day visit; the 7-day pass only pays off on a longer stay.
Know before you go
What makes Gorzów Wielkopolski worth the trip, and what catches visitors out.
Why travelers love it
- The Paucksch Fountain, a 19th-century allegory of the town's working life on the Stary Rynek.
- Lubuskie Museum, set in the Art Nouveau Schroeder villa and the old White Granary.
- A speedway meeting, when the whole town seems to turn out.
Good to know
- Rail links are slow, and most routes need a change; check buses as well.
- Sights are few and close together, so one well-planned day covers the town itself.

The Paucksch Fountain, the medieval walls and a Stal speedway night
Walk ten minutes east from Gorzów station to the Stary Rynek and the Paucksch Fountain of 1897, whose figures carry tools of local trades. Follow the old fortifications to the surviving 130 m stretch of medieval wall, spend the afternoon at the Lubuskie Museum, and if Stal Gorzów race at home, end at the speedway.
The brick Cathedral of St Mary on Obotrycka, just off the square, is the great Gothic landmark of the old town.
Next, follow the line of the old fortifications to the 130 m stretch of 14th-century wall that survives, then walk to Plac Grunwaldzki for the Peace Bell. Have lunch near the square, and look out for the Świnster statue on your way.
Spend the afternoon at the Lubuskie Museum, split between the Art Nouveau villa of the Schroeder family and the White Granary, then walk down to the Warta boulevard as the light fades. If Stal Gorzów have a home meeting, the speedway is the town's big night out; otherwise a beer at Pub Doors on Obotrycka is the local alternative. Drivers with a spare afternoon can swap the museum for a walk in the Barlinek-Gorzów Landscape Park to the north.
Pierogi ruskie and the settlers' kitchen of Gorzów on the Warta
After 1945 Gorzów was repopulated by newcomers, many from Poland's lost eastern borderlands, so its food leans east. Pierogi ruskie, filled with potato and curd cheese and named after historic Ruthenia, appear on almost every menu, and cafés for coffee and cake cluster in the old town near the Warta.
Pierogi ruskie, filled with potato and curd cheese, are named after historic Ruthenia and turn up on almost every Polish menu in town. Look also for barszcz, the clear beetroot soup, and dumplings and potato dishes in canteen-style lunch places.
The café scene is centred on the old town. Cafés for coffee and cake are easy to find around the cathedral, and Pub Doors on Obotrycka, next to the cathedral, works for an evening drink. Lubusz wine from the hills around Zielona Góra sometimes appears on restaurant lists; ask, since beer is still the default. Restaurants change often here, so look along the streets between the Stary Rynek and the river and pick whatever is busy at lunchtime.
