Bytom travel guide
Piast-era market square, Silesian Opera and a summer narrow-gauge line
An old Upper Silesian town next to Katowice with the regional opera company, a big history museum and a narrow-gauge line to the UNESCO mines at Tarnowskie Góry. Best from May to September; one day, plus an opera night if you can. Prices are moderate, and many passports enter visa-free.
Bytom is one of the oldest towns in Upper Silesia. First recorded in 1136, it later had its own Piast dukes. The town lies just 7 km northwest of Katowice. Visitors come for the Silesian Opera, the Upper Silesian Museum and the UNESCO-listed historic silver mine landscape it shares with Tarnowskie Góry.
Be ready for a working city. Decades of mining left subsided streets and empty plots, and the population has been falling since 1999. The traffic-free Rynek is pleasant rather than grand. Look for the Sleeping Lion statue of 1873, which spent years at the gate of Warsaw Zoo before coming home in 2008, then step into the Church of St Mary in the corner, Gothic outside and Baroque within.
Evenings belong to the opera house, a neoclassical building of 1901 whose company was founded in 1945. In summer a narrow-gauge railway runs north to Tarnowskie Góry, the most enjoyable way to reach the mine site.

Getting there
Line 85, M116 and the Tarnowskie Góry trains
Katowice-Pyrzowice airport is only 24 km north of Bytom, linked by the M116 bus, which becomes the M16 without a change, and the slower line 85. Kraków airport has more flights; continue by rail via Katowice. Trains from Katowice run about hourly and take around 30 minutes to the renovated station.
- Bus M116/M16
- Direct from Katowice airport, no change needed
- Train from Katowice
- Roughly hourly, about 30 minutes
- Train from Gliwice
- Every couple of hours, 16 minutes
- By car
- A1 from Warsaw, Łódź and the Czech border runs right past the city
- No long-distance coaches call at Bytom; ride to Katowice and switch to a local bus or train there.
Where to stay
Dworcowa, Musialika or Piłsudskiego
Hotels in Bytom are few, on Dworcowa, Musialika and Piłsudskiego, and most people visit as a day out from Katowice. Stay overnight if you have opera tickets, since the last buses back thin out late in the evening.
- Dworcowa
- The most central small hotel, on the street from the station up to the Rynek; easiest for the opera and the morning train
- Musialika, north of the centre
- A mid-range hotel with parking, quieter at night but a longer walk from the square
- Piłsudskiego
- Serviced apartments with no reception desk; good for independent travellers, awkward for late arrivals unless you arrange the key in advance
Getting around
Bus M3 and the Piekarska tram route
Bytom's old centre is small: the station, the Rynek, the museum and the opera are within a ten-minute walk. ZTM buses and trams use one ticket across the Katowice conurbation, and bus M3 links Katowice and Chorzów with Bytom in about 30 minutes, every 15 minutes by day. Trams 2 and 5 run to Zabrze.
- Bus M3
- Katowice to Bytom in 30 minutes, onward to Tarnowskie Góry
- Piekarska tram
- Passes the Mater Dolorosa Cemetery
- Trams 2 and 5
- West to Zabrze, slow but direct
- Have a valid ticket before you ride and validate it on boarding; plain-clothes inspectors work these lines.

Museum morning, Rynek afternoon, opera night in Bytom
Begin in Bytom at the Upper Silesian Museum on Plac Sobieskiego, the best primer on how the region passed from Piast dukes to Prussia and Poland, and give it two hours. Walk north to the Rynek and its Sleeping Lion memorial, take the summer narrow-gauge train in the afternoon, and end at the Silesian Opera.
Walk north to the Rynek and find the Sleeping Lion, a memorial to local men killed in the Franco-Prussian War. St Mary's looms over the northwest corner behind its small graveyard, older than the town charter itself. One block southeast, St Adalbert's on Plac Klasztorny was once a monastery church; east of the square, the Baroque Church of the Holy Ghost from 1721 still celebrates the old Latin Mass. Lunch on the square at Kolorova.
In summer, give the afternoon to the narrow-gauge train north to Tarnowskie Góry and the UNESCO-listed mine, coming back by bus M3. Out of season, take the tram to the Mater Dolorosa Cemetery for its carved tombs. Have a beer at the Warka microbrewery at Rynek 26 before the curtain rises at the Silesian Opera on Moniuszki.
Kolorova, Dworcowa and Silesian lunches
Bytom eats around its square. Kolorova cooks modern Polish food for a sit-down lunch, Sushi Mnie has the best reputation for raw fish, and Bistro Krakowska 1 does bowls and burgers. Dworcowa, down towards the station, has more tables, and lunch menus carry Silesian dishes such as wodzionka, the frugal miners' soup.
Italian is the other local habit: Wagon Pizza, Pizzeria Sycylia and Włoska Robota are all within a few steps of the Sleeping Lion, and W Lufcie completes the square's line-up.
Walk down Dworcowa towards the station and past the Agora shopping centre for a second cluster, including Li Long, Sapori Divini, Ważne Miejsce and Pod Czaplą. This is the handier strip if you are catching a train.
Wodzionka is the frugal miners' soup of stale bread, garlic and fat, better than it sounds on a cold day, and kołocz, the flat yeast cake topped with poppy seed, cheese or crumble, turns up in bakeries and at family celebrations. For drinks, the pubs gather round the Rynek, and Warka brews its own beer on the square, opening at 16:00 and staying open until 01:00 on Fridays and Saturdays.
