Tychy travel guide
Tyskie's brewery museum, a lakeside hunting lodge and top-flight ice hockey
A post-war planned city south of Katowice built around the Tyskie brewery, with a brewing museum, a lake and a strong ice hockey club. Visit May to September, or in winter for hockey; half a day to a day. Poland is in Schengen, so many visitors need no visa for 90 days.
Tychy lies 20 km south of Katowice, and its story is beer. Tyskie was founded here in 1629 under the Promnitz nobles, and while the rest of Silesia dug coal and smelted iron, this town brewed. After 1950 planners turned it into a new town for workers from the crowded industrial belt, so most of what you see is post-war housing laid out in lettered estates.
The Tyskie Brewing Museum on the historic brewery site is the main draw, with a taproom to finish the tour. Beyond it the city spreads out. Look for the Church of the Holy Spirit on Myśliwska, a modern building shaped roughly like a tent, then walk to Lake Paprocany, where Promnice, a former hunting lodge, sits at the southwest end.
Ice hockey matters here more than football. GKS Tychy play in the Polish top division at the Stadion Zimowy rink, right by the Tychy Lodowisko station.

Getting there
Five Tychy Halts and Direct Buses From Aleja Korfantego
Almost every way into Tychy runs through Katowice, including from Pyrzowice airport. Local trains leave Katowice every 30 minutes and take 20 to 25 minutes, threading through five Tychy stops; stay on to Grota Roweckiego for the hotels and restaurants. A few direct trains a day run from Warsaw in about four hours.

Where to stay
Grota Roweckiego Hotels or Stara Poczta
Most visitors see Tychy in a day from Katowice, but a night suits a GKS hockey match or a long evening in the taprooms. Hotel Tychy and Sleep Well sit by Grota Roweckiego station, Stara Poczta suits drivers near the A4, and The Pyramid is a spa hotel.
- Grota Roweckiego
- Hotel Tychy and the smaller Sleep Well next door, right by the station and the restaurant cluster; central but with street noise
- North, near the A4
- Hotel Stara Poczta on Kościuszki, acceptable and convenient for drivers, but far from the bars
- The Pyramid
- A spa hotel, the pick for a quieter break with treatments
Getting around
Riding Trolleybuses Between Osiedle A and Paprocany
Tychy runs buses and, unusually for Poland, trolleybuses, all on the ZTM ticket that also covers Katowice. The local train's five stops make a quick link between the main station, Grota Roweckiego and the ice rink at Lodowisko. The planned estates are pleasant to walk, but the brewery, lake and centre are far apart.
- Trolleybuses
- Run alongside regular buses on the same ticket
- Local trains
- Five stops across town, from the main station to Lodowisko
- Buses to Katowice
- Direct ZTM links north to the city centre
- The Tychy Żwaków halt on the line south to Bielsko-Biała is on the far edge of town; you are unlikely to need it.

Weather in Tychy, month by month
Month-by-month climate figures for Tychy are being researched.
The Tyskie taproom at noon, Lake Paprocany at sunset
Take a late-morning train from Katowice to Tychy, because the Tyskie Brewing Museum on Katowicka opens only at midday, Tuesday to Sunday, and tells the brewery's story from its founding in 1629. In the early afternoon ride to the Rynek, and give the late afternoon to Lake Paprocany and a walk towards the Promnice hunting lodge.
The tour runs from the founding in 1629 under the Promnitz family through the communist decades to the present Japanese owners, Asahi, who bought it in 2017, and ends in the taproom.
In the early afternoon, ride to the Rynek, which is mostly modern despite a fountain and planting, and look into St Mary Magdalene, a Baroque church of 1782 on its north side. The City Museum on Plac Wolności nearby holds temporary shows. Then head to the Church of the Holy Spirit on Myśliwska, whose tent-like roof is the town's boldest piece of modern architecture; check the short opening hours first.
Walk the shore towards the Promnice hunting lodge at the southwest end and watch the light go down over the water. Return to Grota Roweckiego for dinner and, between autumn and spring, catch a GKS Tychy ice hockey game by Lodowisko station.
Brewing in Tychy beyond Tyskie, from Obywatelski to Grota Roweckiego
Tychy is a town of several breweries. The museum and taproom sit on the historic Tyskie site on Katowicka, where the beer is still brewed, and Obywatelski brews right by the main station, handy before a train. Food centres on Grota Roweckiego, and the Promnice hunting lodge no longer serves lunch.
Wielokran is a microbrewery in the Andromeda complex, and Wilkowyje works on the northwest edge of town. Add Czarny Baran, a local distillery making gin, and you could spend an evening tasting without drinking a single mainstream lager.
Food centres on Grota Roweckiego, a short walk from the halt of the same name. Vietnamese cooking is the surprise here: Saigon and Hanoi are the places to look for pho, and Nudle w Zołzie does noodles. La Classica is the pizza choice, Kaya Sushi sits inside Hotel Tychy, Złoty Smok, Pub Żywiecki and Wynalazcy Smaku round out the strip.
Do not walk out to the Promnice hunting lodge expecting lunch: its old restaurant has gone, and the building is closed while the Pszczyna Castle Museum restores it.
