Lublin travel guide
1418 castle frescoes, the Kraków Gate and onion-topped cebularz
The largest city in eastern Poland, with a compact Old Town, a castle chapel of medieval frescoes and a big student scene. May to September is best. Allow two days, plus one for Kazimierz Dolny. Schengen rules let many nationalities stay 90 days without a visa.
Lublin is the largest Polish city east of the Vistula, about 150 km south-east of Warsaw, and the place where the 1569 Union of Lublin joined Poland and Lithuania into a single Commonwealth. Its Old Town sits on a low hill, and most people walk in through the Kraków Gate from Krakowskie Przedmieście, the long pedestrian street the locals call the Deptak.
Inside the walls, lanes curl round the Crown Tribunal on the market square, once the highest appeal court of the Commonwealth. Just below, Lublin Castle was rebuilt in neo-Gothic style, but its Chapel of the Holy Trinity keeps Byzantine-Ruthenian wall paintings from 1418, the real reason to go in. The castle museum also hangs Matejko's huge Union of Lublin. Climb the Trinity Tower by the cathedral for the best panorama.
Jewish Lublin was once a world centre of learning. Near the castle, the Grodzka Gate and the Chachmei Lublin Yeshiva keep its memory. On the south-eastern edge of the city, Majdanek marks the former German camp. From any bakery, try cebularz: flat bread topped with onion and poppy seed. Lublin is European Capital of Culture for 2029.

From the Kraków Gate to Majdanek over two days
Spend your first morning in Lublin walking the Deptak from plac Litewski to the Kraków Gate, then circle the Crown Tribunal and visit the Dominican basilica. After lunch, see the castle and its Romanesque keep and chapel. Give day two to Jewish Lublin, from the Grodzka Gate to the Majdanek memorial on the city's edge.
Circle the Crown Tribunal on the market square, then follow Złota to the Dominican basilica of St Stanislaus, founded in the 13th century and rebuilt after a fire in 1575; look into the side chapels. Before lunch, climb the Trinity Tower by the cathedral for the view across the roofs.
After eating, go down to the castle. Cross the courtyard to the Romanesque keep and the Chapel of the Holy Trinity, whose walls were painted in 1418, then see Matejko's vast Union of Lublin in the museum galleries. On the way back, stop at the Po Farze square, where the foundations of St Michael's church face the castle. Evenings belong to the Old Town pubs.
Day two turns to Jewish Lublin. Walk through the Grodzka Gate and on to the Chachmei Lublin Yeshiva, then ride a city line out to the Majdanek memorial, which needs at least two hours. Back in the centre, buy a cebularz. A third day is best spent on a minibus to Kazimierz Dolny.
Cebularz, forszmak and where to eat in Lublin
Cebularz is the taste of Lublin: a flat round of wheat dough baked under chopped onion and poppy seed, made here since the Middle Ages and brought into local kitchens by the Jewish community. Buy it warm from a bakery, try forszmak, a spiced stew, and eat in the Old Town or along the Deptak.
Bakers have made it here since the Middle Ages, and it came into Lublin's kitchens through the Jewish community. Buy it warm from a bakery in the morning; by late afternoon it turns chewy. The other dish worth hunting down is forszmak lubelski, a peppery stew of minced meat and sausage with pickled cucumber and tomato, another recipe with Jewish roots.
Most restaurants sit in the Old Town and along the Deptak, with more on Narutowicza, Okopowa and Chopina. Italian places are unusually common, alongside Polish, Jewish and Spanish kitchens. For a cheap fill, the kebab counters on Nadbystrzycka near the Technical University cater to students until late.
Thanks to the large student population, drinking costs little even inside the walls. The Old Town pubs mostly pour one or two Polish lagers on tap, so treat the bar crawl as a night out.
