Bielsko-Biała travel guide

Little Vienna's 19th-century streets and a cable car into the Beskids

In short

Two textile towns merged into one at the foot of the Beskids, with a castle museum, a 19th-century Rynek and a cable car straight into the mountains. May to September is best for hiking, and winter brings skiing on Szyndzielnia. Allow two days. Costs are moderate, and many nationalities need no visa.

Bielsko-Biała sits where the plain meets the Beskid Mountains, about 70 minutes south of Katowice by train. It is really two towns. Bielsko, on the west bank of the Biała, was Silesian, while Biała on the east bank belonged to Lesser Poland; they merged only in 1951. Both made their money from wool and cloth, and the grand 19th-century streets that money paid for earned the city the nickname Little Vienna.

Getting there

Katowice trains via Pszczyna, or the Lajkonik coach from Kraków

Kraków-Balice, about 65 km east, and Katowice-Pyrzowice, about 80 km north, both serve Bielsko-Biała, usually with a change downtown. Hourly regional trains from Katowice take about 70 minutes to Bielsko-Biała Główna, the 1890 station facing the bus station. From Kraków, the Lajkonik coach beats the slow direct trains.

Train from Katowice
Hourly, about 70 minutes via Tychy, Pszczyna and Czechowice-Dziedzice
Lajkonik coach from Kraków
Hourly, about 2 hours via Tychy; most continue to Cieszyn, a few to Ustroń and Wisła
Train from Warsaw
A few direct a day, about 4 hours 30 minutes via Częstochowa and Katowice
Long-distance coaches
FlixBus and others link the city with Gdańsk and Warsaw; check current departures
  • Coming from Vienna, Prague, Budapest or Ostrava, change trains at Czechowice-Dziedzice, before Katowice.
  • Direct Kraków trains take about 2 hours 30 minutes; the coach is half an hour quicker.

The Schodowa steps, the House of Frogs and the Szyndzielnia ridge

Give your first Bielsko-Biała day to the town: coffee at Oskar on the Rynek, the castle on Wzgórze for the historical museum, closed Mondays, and after lunch the Lutheran quarter of Bielski Syjon around Martin Luther Square and the House of Frogs. On day two, take bus 8 to the cable car and ride up Szyndzielnia.

From the castle, go down the stepped lane of Schodowa and look up at the 61-metre tower of St Nicholas cathedral a block south. Its origins go back to the 1440s, but the church you see was rebuilt in 1912.

After lunch, walk 200 m north of the Rynek to Martin Luther Square and the Church of the Saviour, the heart of Bielski Syjon, the Lutheran quarter that marks how Protestant this side of the river was. Look for the Art Nouveau House of Frogs on the way, then cross the river to the old Biała town and finish at the Weaver's House on Sobieskiego, a reminder of the cloth trade that built both towns. The BWA gallery on 3 Maja is a short detour for contemporary art.

On day two, ride bus 8 to the cable car and go up Szyndzielnia. From the top, marked trails follow the ridge towards Klimczok, and in clear weather the Beskid ranges roll away south. Come down in time for a beer at Browar Miejski.

Karczma Rogata, Browar Miejski and Beskid hut meals in Bielsko-Biała

The river once split Silesia from Lesser Poland, and Bielsko-Biała's menus mix the two. Karczma Rogata on Leszczyńska serves hearty Silesian dishes such as żurek and potato dumplings in a tavern setting, Browar Miejski on Piwowarska brews its own beer, and on the Beskid trails the mountain huts feed hikers.

For a change, Lunita by the Weaver's House cooks Georgian dishes such as khachapuri, Nowy Świat on 11 Listopada does modern European plates, and Ebisu on Stojałowskiego makes sushi.

On the mountain, eat the way Polish hikers do. Mountain huts on the Beskid trails serve simple, filling plates such as placki ziemniaczane (potato pancakes), bigos and hot soup, with szarlotka apple cake and tea to finish. Arrive before the lunchtime rush on summer weekends.

Back in town, the bars cluster on and around the Rynek: Celna 10, Craft Bar, Chmielowe Podcienia, Grawitacja and Azyl among them, with more towards the station. Rumoteka on Podcienie specialises in rum, an unusual choice in a beer and vodka region.
