Rybnik travel guide
A pond-site market square, Górecki's music school and a summer reservoir
The commercial centre of southwestern Silesia, close to the Czech border, with a strong musical tradition and a reservoir for summer days. Best from May to September; a day trip from Katowice is enough. Schengen rules give many nationalities 90 days without a visa.
Rybnik is the main town of southwestern Silesia, 38 km from Katowice and about 19 km short of the Czech border. Its name comes from an old Slavic word for a fish pond, and the market square was laid out on the spot where that pond once stood.
Coal drove the town's growth from the late 19th century until the 1980s, and the economy has been moving away from mining since. Music is the cultural thread. A local music school run by the Szafranek family trained the composer Henryk Górecki, and the Rybnik Philharmonic gives regular concerts.
On the skyline, the twin towers of the neo-Gothic Basilica of St Anthony stand over the centre. In summer, locals head out to the reservoir for water sports and walks along the shore.

Getting there
Koleje Śląskie From Katowice and the A1 to Gorzyczki
Rybnik has no airport, so fly into Katowice-Pyrzowice and continue through Katowice. Koleje Śląskie regional trains link Katowice with Rybnik in roughly an hour, and the station is within walking distance of the Rynek. Drivers use the A1, which passes town on the way to the Czech border at Gorzyczki and Ostrava.
- Katowice airport
- Nearest international airport; change in central Katowice
- Train from Katowice
- Regional services, roughly an hour
- By car
- A1 motorway, about 19 km from the Czech border
- Check the train times back to Katowice before an evening concert, as late services are sparse.
Getting around
Rybnik's Own City Buses, Not the GZM Network
Walk Rybnik's compact centre, where the Rynek, the old town hall and the basilica are minutes apart. Rybnik lies outside the Katowice metropolitan network and runs its own buses, about 40 day lines and two night lines, with its own tickets, so a Katowice pass will not work. Take a bus or car to the reservoir.
- Walking
- Rynek, old town hall and the basilica
- City buses
- Local network and tickets, separate from the Katowice system
- Reservoir
- Bus, car or a long walk from the centre
- Ask at your hotel or the tourist office which bus line serves the reservoir shore before you set out.
Know before you go
What makes Rybnik worth the trip, and what catches visitors out.
Why travelers love it
- The market square, set over the old fish pond that named the town.
- A Philharmonic concert, part of a music tradition shaped by the Szafranek family's school.
- The reservoir in summer, where locals go for water sports and lakeside walks.
Good to know
- Treat Rybnik as a day out, not a sightseeing destination; the pleasures are low key.
- Check the Philharmonic calendar before you go, as a concert is the best use of an evening.

Rybnik's old town hall, St Anthony's towers and the reservoir shore
Arrive from Katowice by mid-morning and walk up to Rybnik's Rynek, once a fish pond before the town grew up around it, and look into the old town hall, home of the town museum. Continue to the twin-towered neo-Gothic Basilica of St Anthony, and on a warm afternoon take a bus or taxi out to the reservoir.
Look into the old town hall on the square, which houses the town museum, for the story of how fishing, trade and crafts gave way to coal.
Walk on to the Basilica of St Anthony, the neo-Gothic church whose two towers you will have seen from the train. Its size says much about how fast Rybnik grew once the coal fields opened in the late 19th century. Lunch in one of the cafés around the square.
On a warm afternoon, take a bus or taxi out to the reservoir for a walk along the shore or an hour on the water. In cooler months, spend the time in the streets around the Rynek instead. In the evening, book a Rybnik Philharmonic concert or a touring production, both staged in the 650-seat hall of the Teatr Ziemi Rybnickiej. On a summer weekend, a home meeting of ROW Rybnik, the town's speedway club, is the noisier alternative.
Moczka, makówki and a Silesian Sunday obiad
Rybnik eats like the rest of Upper Silesia, and its best food is home cooking. The Sunday obiad, eaten in the early afternoon, runs from clear broth with noodles to rolada with kluski and red cabbage. Christmas brings moczka, a sweet gingerbread compote, and makówki, a poppy-seed pudding.
The Sunday obiad, eaten in the early afternoon, is close to sacred: a clear broth with noodles, then rolada with kluski and modro kapusta, red cabbage cooked with bacon. Weekday lunch menus in cafés and canteens around the Rynek are where visitors are most likely to meet a version of it.
Christmas brings out the dishes that set this corner of Poland apart. Moczka is a dark, sticky compote of dried fruit, nuts and gingerbread; makówki layers bread or bun soaked in milk with sweet poppy seed; and some families still start Christmas Eve with siemieniotka, a soup made from hemp seed. If you are here in December, look for them at bakeries and festive stalls.
For everyday eating, the pizzerias and cafés around the square cover most needs. Bakeries sell kołocz, the flat Silesian yeast cake, all year, which makes a good snack for the reservoir.
