Elbląg travel guide
Boats on rails, a rebuilt Hanseatic old town and Bażantarnia forest
A rebuilt Hanseatic port near the Vistula Lagoon and the starting point for boat trips on the Elbląg Canal. Come from May to September when the boats run, and give it one or two days. Schengen rules let many passports stay 90 days without a visa.
Elbląg lies near the Vistula Lagoon in northern Poland, an hour by road east of Gdańsk, and was a Hanseatic port from the 13th century. Most people come for the Elbląg Canal, the 19th-century waterway where boats are hauled over dry land on rail carriages.
The Old Town was almost wiped out in 1945. What stands now is largely a modern rebuild that follows the old plots and gables, with the tall St Nicholas Cathedral and the Market Gate, begun in 1319, as the medieval survivors, both repaired after the war. Walk the narrow Church Path between brick houses, then visit the museum on the old Teutonic castle grounds, which holds finds from Truso, an early trading settlement nearby.
For the city's everyday side, take the tram a couple of kilometres north into the communist-era new town, where concrete canteens serve soup and schnitzel to locals. Wash it down with Specjal, brewed here.

Getting there
Regional trains from Gdańsk
Fly into Gdańsk, ride to Gdańsk Główny and take a direct regional train east to Elbląg; trains from Gdynia run through too. Fast EIP and EIC trains skip Elbląg, so change at Malbork. The rail and coach stations stand side by side, and the S7 expressway links Gdańsk in about an hour.
- Gdańsk airport (GDN)
- Local train or taxi to Gdańsk Główny, then a direct regional train
- Fast Intercity trains
- Change at Malbork for EIP and EIC services
- Station to Old Town
- A long walk, so take the tram from outside the station
- Buy your tram ticket at the newsagent beside the station before you walk out to the stop.
- Planning the canal? Arrive the evening before, as the long boat trips leave in the morning.
Where to stay
Lodgings by the Market Gate and the lagoon
Most visitors sleep in Elbląg's rebuilt Old Town, near the Market Gate, so the canal boat terminal, the cathedral and the restaurants are a few minutes' walk away. Drivers have more choice outside the city, including lodgings near the Vistula Lagoon shore.
- Old Town (Kowalska, św. Ducha)
- Hotel Pod Lwem fills a restored 16th-century house; Pensjonat MF is a smaller guesthouse near the museum. Best for canal trips, but busiest in summer
- Panieńska, by the river
- Camping No61 sits on the Old Town's riverside edge, handy for campervans and cyclists
- New town, around Plac Słowiański
- Cheaper and closer to everyday Elbląg, with the tram for the Old Town
- Kadyny, on the Vistula Lagoon
- Kadyny Country Club, quiet and green, but only practical with a car
Getting around
Tram 2, Plac Słowiański and Old Town lanes
Walk Elbląg's Old Town, where the cathedral, Church Path, Market Gate and museum are minutes apart. The small tram network links the rail and coach stations with the centre and runs to Bażantarnia forest park; buy tickets at kiosks and stamp them on board. A car helps only for Kadyny, the lagoon and the slipways.
- Tram 2
- From the station and Plac Słowiański to the Marymoncka stop for Bażantarnia
- Plac Słowiański
- Tram hub between the new town and the Old Town
- On foot
- Every Old Town sight within about ten minutes
- Coach passengers get the same tram connection, as the PKS coach station stands right next to the railway station.

From St Nicholas's spire in Elbląg to the Buczyniec slipway
Take the tram from the station to St Nicholas Cathedral on Mostowa, slip into the narrow Church Path, and visit the museum on Bulwar Zygmunta Augusta for the Truso finds. On day two, board a canal boat early to ride the Elbląg Canal, where boats are hauled overland on rails at slipways such as Buczyniec.
Afternoon. Head to the museum on Bulwar Zygmunta Augusta, tucked behind ulica św. Ducha on the site of the Teutonic castle. The Truso finds are the reason to go: Viking-age trade goods from the lagoon shore. Ask at the till to see the reconstructed early medieval house in the garden.
Evening. Eat in the Old Town, then walk the river boulevard as the light goes.
Day two. Board a canal boat at the Old Town terminal early. The section with the five slipways at Całuny, Jelenie, Oleśnica, Kąty and Buczyniec is the part worth seeing, where the boat is pulled out of the water on a rail cradle and carried over the hill. Most people leave the boat there and return to Elbląg by road, skipping the full ten hours to Ostróda. If the boats are not sailing, take tram 2 to Bażantarnia instead and follow the ravines along the stream.
Specjal lager, Old Town żurek and Bar Kalinka canteen trays
Elbląg eats on two levels. Old Town restaurants serve Polish standards such as żurek, pierogi and schabowy, with Restauracja Słowiańska on Krótka a reliable choice, while the communist-era new town up the tram line has cheap canteens such as Bar Kalinka. Drink Specjal, brewed in Elbląg since 1872, and look for lagoon fish.
Restauracja Słowiańska on Krótka covers Polish and Italian dishes and is well liked for its steaks. The Vistula Lagoon is only about 10 km north, so ask what fish is on, as pike-perch and other lagoon catches appear on Old Town menus when in season.
Here the old communist-style canteens still trade from concrete blocks, and they are the cheapest hot meal in the city. Bar Kalinka on ulica 12 Lutego is the one to try: take a tray, point at the soup of the day and a breaded schnitzel, and sit with office workers and pensioners. Lunchtime is when the pots are fullest.
To drink, order Specjal. The Elbląg brewery that makes it dates from 1872 and is the largest in Poland, and its lager is on tap across the city. Światowid, the socialist-era culture house with a cinema and a restaurant, is a good spot for an evening drink before a film.

They come from Truso, an early medieval trading settlement near the lagoon. The museum on the old Teutonic castle site shows them alongside finds dug from beneath the Old Town.
For an hour, yes. Światowid, the old socialist culture house, and the canteens such as Bar Kalinka show a side of the city the rebuilt Old Town hides.
