Ruda Śląska travel guide
Eleven industrial districts, a relocated blast furnace and a 1937 cinema
A sprawl of mining districts next to Katowice with a few odd sights and cheap rooms near the stations. Visit from May to September for half a day, or use it as a low-cost base for the conurbation. Many passports enter visa-free under Poland's Schengen rules.
Ruda Śląska borders Katowice to the west but never formed a proper centre. Mining and steel settlements grew side by side and stayed separate, so the city is a string of eleven districts such as Nowy Bytom, Halemba and Wirek. Trams and buses tie them together.
Industry is still alive here, at a cost: mine explosions killed 23 people at Halemba in 2006 and 20 at Wujek-Śląsk in 2009. The most striking sight is the 1968 blast furnace of the Pokój steelworks, a 1,780-tonne structure that engineers moved 19 m to its current spot. Production stopped in 2005, and for now you can only look at it through the fence.
Come with modest expectations and an interest in how Silesia actually lives. Kino Patria, a cinema open since 1937, and the Druid Pub near the city hall are the best reasons to linger after dark.

Getting there
Chebzie Hall or the Unstaffed Ruda Halt
Everything reaches Ruda Śląska through Katowice. From Pyrzowice airport, take the bus to central Katowice and change. Local trains reach town in about 17 minutes; get off at Ruda Chebzie, whose old station hall holds cafés and a library, has step-free access and trams outside, not at the bleak unstaffed Ruda Śląska halt.
- Train from Katowice
- Frequent through the day, about 17 minutes
- Ruda Chebzie
- Refurbished hall, step-free access, trams to Ruda Południowa
- By car
- A4 from Kraków (80 km) or Wrocław (160 km)
- No long-distance coaches call here; book your coach to Katowice and finish by train.
- Travelling with a heavy case or a pushchair, avoid Ruda Śląska station, which has stairs only.
Where to stay
Adria by the Tracks, Hostels in Chebzie and Diament
Rooms in Ruda Śląska are simple and cheaper than in Katowice, making it a practical base for touring the conurbation by train. Choose by station: the Adria hotel by the Ruda Śląska halt, a hostel near Ruda Chebzie, or Hostel Diament on the southern edge for drivers.
- Ruda Śląska station
- A comfortable hotel right at the halt on Wolności, convenient for early trains but with some train noise
- Ruda Chebzie
- A plain, usually clean hostel on Magazynowa near the station, good for budget travellers who want the trams
- Southern edge
- Hostel Diament on Czarnoleśna, smart and clean but far from the stations, so better for drivers
Getting around
ZTM Buses and Trams Across Eleven Districts
Ruda Śląska has no real centre, so you move between eleven districts. Trams from Ruda Chebzie run to Ruda Południowa and on to Zabrze and Gliwice, and ZTM buses fill the gaps on the same ticket used across Katowice and the conurbation, so one day pass covers trains and trams.
- Buses from Katowice
- Direct ZTM routes to Ruda Śląska and the southern district of Halemba
- Chebzie northwards
- ZTM buses link Chebzie with old Ruda and carry on towards Bytom
- Trams from Chebzie
- To Ruda Południowa, Zabrze and Gliwice
- Distances between districts are several kilometres, so do not plan to walk from Chebzie to Halemba.
- The church of St Joseph is only 400 m north of Ruda Śląska station, an easy stroll if you are waiting for a train.

Weather in Ruda Śląska, month by month
Month-by-month climate figures for Ruda Śląska are being researched.
From the Chebzie station café to the Pokój furnace
Take a morning train from Katowice to Ruda Chebzie and have a coffee in the restored station hall, then ride a ZTM bus north to the old Ruda district for a guided tour at the City Museum on Wolności. Spend the afternoon at the Pokój steelworks on Hutnicza, whose fenced blast furnace is the city's landmark.
Plan your museum stop around the guided tours at the City Museum on Wolności, named after the local figure Maksymilian Chrobok and housed in a building that served first as a training school and then as the town hall. Tours run Tuesday to Friday and on Sunday afternoons, and the guide sets the pace. The church of St Joseph, built in 1902-04, is a few minutes away on Piastowska. Afterwards, ride to Nowy Bytom, the district the Germans called Friedenshütte, and Plac Jana Pawła II, where the 1912 neo-Romanesque church of St Paul faces the plain city hall. Lunch on the square.
The furnace is fenced off, and there has been talk of a museum since production stopped in 2005, but even from the road the scale is impressive, and it is hard to picture moving it sideways. Return to the square for a pint at the Druid, catch an evening film at Kino Patria on Chorzowska, or see what is on at the Silesian Impresario Theatre just north of the city hall.
Plac Jana Pawła II, the Druid Pub and Duet brewery
Ruda Śląska's eating is honest and cheap, and most of it sits around Plac Jana Pawła II in Nowy Bytom, with Mąka & Oliwa, Smakosz and Żółty Smok within a short walk. The Druid Pub on Niedurnego, near the city hall, is the evening favourite, and Wirek has the Duet microbrewery.
It is a short, practical list.
The Druid Pub on Niedurnego, about 200 m north of the city hall, is where the town actually gathers. It serves solid, inexpensive food alongside the beer, opens at noon, stays open until 02:00 on Fridays and Saturdays, and now and then hosts events. If you only eat one meal here, make it there.
Beer drinkers should also head southwest to Wirek, where the Duet microbrewery pours its own beers. The Ruda Śląska Plaza mall has the usual chain food court if you are catching a film at its multiplex.
