Chorzów travel guide
Park Śląski, the Silesian Stadium and lunch on the Rynek
A former steel and mining town fused to Katowice, home to the vast Park Śląski with its zoo, planetarium and the Silesian Stadium. Visit May to September; one day is right, with Katowice as your base. Schengen rules apply, so many nationalities need no visa for 90 days.
Chorzów is wedged against Katowice in the Upper Silesian conurbation, so close that the tram ride between them barely feels like leaving town. Visitors come for Park Śląski on its eastern edge, one of Europe's largest city parks, and for the Silesian Stadium inside it. Rebuilt with about 54,000 seats, it has been Ruch Chorzów's home ground since 2023 and also stages a Diamond League athletics meeting and big rock concerts.
Inside the park, give yourself a full day: the Silesian Zoo, the Legendia amusement park, a planetarium and an open-air museum of Upper Silesian buildings are all here. Trams run along the park from Katowice, and the stadium has its own stop.
Back in the town centre, the Rynek has an 1876 town hall and an 1892 post office, though a highway flyover slices straight across the square. Look inside the neo-Gothic Martin Luther Church, plain outside but ornate within. Lunch is honest Silesian cooking: Pod Beczką on the Rynek serves local dishes and pierogi at fair prices. Many people sleep in Katowice, just 8 minutes away by train.

Getting there
Tram along the boulevard or eight minutes by train to Batory
Plan any trip to Chorzów through Katowice, as there is no direct airport link and long-distance trains stop in Katowice. From there, trains reach Chorzów Batory, 1 km south of the centre, in about 8 minutes every 30 minutes, and trams run often along the boulevard past Park Śląski and the stadium into town.
- Train from Katowice
- About 8 minutes to Chorzów Batory, every 30 minutes
- Tram from Katowice
- Frequent, best for Park Śląski and the stadium
- From Pyrzowice (KTW)
- Bus to Katowice, then tram or train
- Chorzów Miasto
- Central station on the line to Tarnowskie Góry, back in rail service since December 2024
- Batory station is gloomy and has no facilities, so buy tickets and snacks in Katowice before you set off.
Where to stay
Focus by Batory station, Rynek rooms or a Katowice bed
Chorzów's hotels are few and uneven: the Focus by Batory station is a practical mid-range chain, and the Black Gold Center near the Rynek is basic. Katowice, minutes away by train or tram, has far wider choice and better nightlife, so many visitors sleep there.
- Near Batory station (Armii Krajowej)
- Focus Hotel, a mid-range chain beside the main road and railway; practical and plain
- Town centre (Bolesława Chrobrego)
- Black Gold Center is basic and cheap, a short walk from the Rynek restaurants; standards vary
- Katowice
- Far wider choice and better nightlife, 8 minutes by train or a tram ride from Park Śląski
Getting around
ZTM Metropolia trams around Park Śląski and the Rynek
ZTM Metropolia runs Chorzów's trams and buses on the same ticket as Katowice. Trams are the backbone, running past Park Śląski and the stadium into the centre, then south to Batory station, west to Ruda Chebzie and north to Bytom. Park Śląski is large, so plan the order of the zoo, Legendia and the open-air museum.
- Trams
- Katowice to Park Śląski, then on to the centre and Bytom
- Chorzów Batory
- Main station, 1 km south of the centre, with no facilities
- On foot
- Rynek, Wolności, the Luther church and St Hedwig's are close together
Know before you go
What makes Chorzów worth the trip, and what catches visitors out.
Why travelers love it
- The open-air museum in Park Śląski, with wooden farmhouses and a church brought from across Upper Silesia.
- A concert at the Silesian Stadium, with tens of thousands inside the rebuilt bowl.
- Pod Beczką on the Rynek, for pierogi and Silesian plates at lunchtime.
Good to know
- The town history museum on Powstańców stopped showing exhibitions in 2023 and its building is being sold, so do not build a day around it.
- Pod Beczką keeps lunchtime hours and shuts in the early evening, so do not plan dinner there.

The Silesian Zoo, Legendia and Chorzów's Rynek
Ride the tram from Katowice to the Silesian Stadium stop, walk round the rebuilt stadium, and spend the morning in Park Śląski, where families head for the Silesian Zoo and the Legendia rides. Take the tram into town for lunch at Pod Beczką, walk the Rynek with its 1876 town hall, and end at Teatr Rozrywki.
Walk around the outside of the rebuilt bowl, then head into Park Śląski. Everyone else may prefer the open-air museum of Upper Silesian wooden houses and farm buildings, or a show at the planetarium, which suits a grey day.
Lunch. Take the tram on into the town centre and eat at Pod Beczką on the Rynek, which closes in the early evening.
Afternoon. Walk the Rynek itself: the 1876 town hall and the 1892 post office survive, though a highway flyover runs straight across the square. Step inside the Martin Luther Church on Powstańców, bare outside and richly decorated within, then walk a block west to Zjednoczenia for the 1935 savings bank, at 40 m once one of the tallest buildings in Poland. Finish at St Hedwig's on Wolności, a neo-Romanesque church from the 1870s.
Evening. Catch a show at Teatr Rozrywki on Konopnickiej, or have a beer at Kraken or Szuflada near the Rynek before the train back to Katowice from Batory.
Rolada, kluski and kołocz on Chorzów's Rynek and Wolności
Chorzów's food is Silesian, found in the restaurants on the Rynek and ulica Wolności; Pod Beczką at Rynek 7 is the reliable lunch stop. Learn three dishes: rolada, a beef roll with bacon and pickle, kluski śląskie potato dumplings, and red cabbage. For something sweet, look for kołocz, the crumble-topped Silesian yeast cake.
Learn three dishes before you sit down. Rolada is a beef roll filled with bacon, onion and pickled cucumber, served in gravy. It comes with kluski śląskie, round potato dumplings pressed with a thumb so the dimple holds the sauce, and modra kapusta, braised red cabbage. Together they are the classic Silesian Sunday dinner. Żur śląski, the sour rye soup, often arrives with sausage and potatoes, and krupnioki, blood sausage with groats, turn up fried with onion.
For something sweet, look for kołocz, the flat Silesian yeast cake topped with crumble and filled with poppy seed or curd cheese, in bakeries and cafés around the Rynek. Other places on the strip include Cafe Paterman, Na Winklu, Tygiel Kulinarny and Pod Drewnianym Bocianem, and there are Italian options for those who have had their fill of dumplings.
