Wałbrzych travel guide
Książ Castle, a palm house and the old coal mine
A hilly former mining city in Lower Silesia, an hour from Wrocław by train, worth the trip for Książ Castle and the Stara Kopalnia mine centre. May to October is best; give it one full day, two with Szczawno-Zdrój or Świdnica. Prices are moderate, and many nationalities need no visa.
Wałbrzych spreads over steep hills in the Sudeten foothills of Lower Silesia, about an hour by train from Wrocław and 30 km from the Czech border. Coal built it, and the end of mining left it poor. The reason to come is Książ Castle on a wooded ridge at the town's northern edge. It is the largest castle in Silesia and the third largest in Poland.
Give Książ most of a day. The castle has been rebuilt many times since the 13th century; across the valley stands Stary Książ, an older castle site that the Hochbergs reworked into romantic ruins in the 1790s so it could be admired from the terraces. Down on Wrocławska, the palm house the Hochberg family built in 1911-14 has a café among the plants, and riders can book an outing at the Książ stud.
In town, the market square has old tenement houses around a fountain whose water patterns change every few minutes. A bugle call sounds daily from the mock-Gothic town hall. Stara Kopalnia, a closed mine turned science and art centre, tells the coal story well. The spa town of Szczawno-Zdrój adjoins the city, and the Church of Peace in Świdnica is a short drive.

Getting there
Koleje Dolnośląskie trains to Wałbrzych Miasto
Fly into Wrocław Copernicus Airport, about 70 km away, then take a train from Wrocław Główny to Wałbrzych in about an hour. Choose your station carefully: Wałbrzych Główny is far from the sights, while Miasto, Centrum and Fabryczny are closer to the centre, though not every train stops at all three. Drivers take the DK35.
- Miasto, Centrum or Fabryczny
- Closest to the centre; not every train stops at all three
- Wałbrzych Główny
- Far from town despite the name
- From Wrocław by train
- About 1 hour, regional and some Intercity services
- By car
- Under an hour from Wrocław on the DK35
- Look at the station name on your ticket: a train that only calls at Główny leaves you with a long bus ride into town.
Where to stay
Market square rooms, Książ grounds or Szczawno-Zdrój spa
Sleeping options in Wałbrzych are scattered across the hills, so decide first whether you come by train or by car. Market-square rooms suit train travellers, hotels in the Książ grounds suit drivers, and Szczawno-Zdrój, the spa town next door, has the most character.
- Centre and market square
- Walk to cafés and to Wałbrzych Miasto station; the best base without a car
- Książ Castle grounds
- Wake up next to the main sight, with the park and the stud on the doorstep; out of town, so evenings are quiet
- Szczawno-Zdrój
- The neighbouring spa town, greener and calmer, with old spa buildings and a short hop into Wałbrzych
- Magnolia area, ulica 1 Maja
- ibis Styles in an out-of-town shopping complex, easy by car and awkward otherwise
Getting around
City buses up to Książ and over Wałbrzych's hills
Wałbrzych sprawls over several hills, and walks between districts are long and steep. The market square, town hall and Guardian Angels Church are close together, but Książ Castle on the northern edge and Stara Kopalnia need a city bus or taxi. A car helps for Szczawno-Zdrój, Świdnica and the Owl Mountains tunnels.
- Książ Castle
- Northern edge of town; take a bus or drive
- Stara Kopalnia
- In the old mining quarter, best by bus or taxi from the centre
- On foot
- Market square, town hall and Guardian Angels Church within a few minutes
- Wear proper shoes: the paths between Książ and the Stary Książ ruins drop steeply into the gorge.
Know before you go
What makes Wałbrzych worth the trip, and what catches visitors out.
Why travelers love it
- Książ from Stary Książ, the staged ruins across the valley, remodelled with exactly this view in mind.
- The palm house café on Wrocławska, coffee under glass among tropical plants.
- Stara Kopalnia, where the pithead buildings of a closed mine now hold exhibitions.
Good to know
- Wałbrzych Główny is not central; get off at Miasto or Centrum instead.
- The Nazi gold train that made headlines in 2015 was never found, and there is nothing to visit.

Książ Castle, the Stary Książ ruins and Stara Kopalnia
Give Wałbrzych two days. Go to Książ Castle early on the first, before the coaches, to tour the much-rebuilt castle and walk its terraces over the wooded gorge, then cross the valley to the Stary Książ ruins. Spend the second morning underground at Stara Kopalnia, the old mine, and the afternoon on the market square.
Afternoon. Take the path down and across the valley to Stary Książ, where the remains of an older castle were turned into a garden folly of artificial ruins at the end of the 18th century. The view back to the castle is the reason they exist. Riders can book an hour at the Książ stud on Jeździecka. Late in the day, head to the palm house on Wrocławska, built in 1911-14 by the Hochbergs, and have coffee under the glass.
Day two, morning. Spend it at Stara Kopalnia, where the pithead buildings, towers and workshops of a closed coal mine have become a science and art centre that explains what made the city.
Afternoon. Walk the market square, with its tenement houses and the fountain whose patterns change every few minutes, and listen for the bugle call from the mock-Gothic town hall. Look into the neo-Gothic Guardian Angels Church, 60 m long. For the evening, climb through Park Sobieskiego to the PTTK hut on the hilltop, or ride out to Szczawno-Zdrój for a walk in its spa park.
Pierogowa Chata, coffee in the palm house and Szczawno spa water
Wałbrzych's food is simple and filling, the food of a mining city. Order a mixed plate at Pierogowa Chata on Wrocławska, where pierogi are the whole menu, drink coffee at Pod Tropikiem inside the palm house, and cross into Szczawno-Zdrój to taste the spa town's mineral waters at the pump room.
Start with pierogi: Pierogowa Chata on Wrocławska makes them its whole menu, with fillings from potato and curd cheese (ruskie) to meat and cabbage. Order a mixed plate and a bowl of żurek or barszcz on the side.
For something lighter, the city does cafés well. Pod Tropikiem sits inside the palm house, so you drink coffee surrounded by tropical plants, a good plan for a cold or wet day. In the centre, Pasaż on plac Magistracki is close to the town hall, and Pod Pretekstem Art Cafe and Złota Stacja share an address on Rycerska. Caffe Sztygarówka on Wysockiego takes its name from the mine foremen, the sztygar.
Up on the hill in Park Sobieskiego, the PTTK hut called Harcówka serves walkers' food with a view, the kind of place for soup and a beer after the climb.
They taste strongly of minerals, an acquired taste, but a glass is part of the visit.
