Chennai to Dhaka flight guide
Various airlines fly nonstop from Chennai International Airport (MAA) to Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka (DAC): IndiGo, US-Bangla Airlines and Biman Bangladesh Airlines. The 1,617 km flight takes about 2 hours 40 minutes. Most passengers are Bangladeshi patients heading home after treatment in Chennai or Vellore, together with the relatives who travelled with them.
IndiGo flies 6E1113 daily on an Airbus A320neo and includes 15 kg of checked baggage on its standard fare. US-Bangla, about three times a week, and Biman, on a Boeing 737-800 once a week, both include 30 kg. All of them allow 7 kg in the cabin. Anyone bringing back months of medicine gains a lot from the larger allowance; keep the prescriptions with the tablets.
Head for Terminal 2. It took over all international departures in July 2023, and Terminals 1 and 4 now handle domestic flights only, so tell the driver T2.
The airport has its own station on the Chennai Metro Blue Line, with a shuttle from the platform to the terminals, and the suburban South Line stops at Tirusulam beside the airport. Both help on weekday evenings, when the 21 km road trip from the centre can crawl.
Patients treated at CMC Vellore face a longer run. Vellore lies about 135 km west of Chennai, so set aside most of a morning by road with a margin for traffic on the outskirts; those preferring the train usually board at Katpadi Junction, around 5 km north of the hospital.
Chennai gets most of its rain from October to December, with November the wettest month at an average of 377.3 mm, and cyclones and depressions are common then. Check the airline's flight status before leaving the hospital or hotel. April to June is the hottest stretch, with daytime averages between 35 and 40 °C, so plan airport runs for the cooler early hours and keep temperature-sensitive medicine out of a hot car.
Add 30 minutes to your watch on landing. Indian Standard Time is UTC+5:30 and Bangladesh UTC+6, and neither changes its clocks.
Bangladeshi passport holders walk straight through immigration. Indian passport holders need a Bangladesh visa before boarding, since India is not on the visa-on-arrival list. British, Omani and EU citizens are among those who can get a single-entry visa on arrival for up to 30 days, for 51 US dollars or euros in cash, with a passport valid for six months, an onward ticket and an address in Bangladesh.
The airport sits on Dhaka's northern edge, with Uttara just beyond it and Gulshan and Banani a drive south along Airport Road. International arrivals still use Terminal 1 in the original building; Terminal 3 was partly inaugurated in October 2023, and the civil aviation minister said in September 2026 that it will soft-open on 16 December 2026, with full operations in March or April 2027.
A prepaid taxi kiosk past the arrivals exit sells fixed fares, which suits a patient still recovering. Uber, Pathao, Obhai and Shohoz all operate there, though evening traffic can stretch a short distance into an hour. The Dhaka Elevated Expressway, joined at Kawla, runs 11.5 km to Farmgate with a Karwan Bazar exit and skips the signals below for a toll.
Three airlines operate direct flights from Chennai (MAA) to Dhaka (DAC). The flight takes about 2h 40m.

Getting there
Terminal 2. It took over all international departures in July 2023, replacing the older international buildings. Terminals 1 and 4 are for domestic flights only, so tell the driver T2 rather than just 'the airport'.

Not yet. Terminal 3 was partly inaugurated in October 2023 but has not opened for passengers; a soft opening is planned for 16 December 2026 and full operations for March or April 2027. Until then, international arrivals use Terminal 1 in the original building.
The Dhaka Elevated Expressway. Its 11.5 km Airport to Farmgate section opened in September 2023, with the southbound ramp at Kawla on Airport Road, and a Karwan Bazar exit was added in March 2024. It skips the signals on the ground road below, at the cost of a toll.

Timing & weather
Yes, by half an hour forward. Indian Standard Time sits five and a half hours ahead of UTC and Bangladesh six, and neither country moves its clocks, so the gap never changes. Add thirty minutes to your watch on landing so you do not misjudge a pickup.
It can. Chennai gets most of its rain from October to December, with November the wettest month at an average of 377.3 mm, and cyclones and depressions are common then. If you fly in that window, check the airline's flight status before leaving the hospital or hotel.
April to June, when daytime averages sit between 35 and 40 °C. Plan hospital visits and airport runs for the cooler early hours, carry water, and keep any temperature-sensitive medicine out of a hot car.
Visa & documents
Yes. India is not on Bangladesh's visa-on-arrival list, so the airline will expect to see a visa in your passport at check-in. Apply well before your travel date rather than relying on anything at the Shahjalal immigration desk.
British, Omani and EU citizens are among those eligible. It is single entry for up to 30 days, the fee is 51 US dollars or euros in cash, and you need a passport valid for 6 months, an onward ticket and an address in Bangladesh. The officer at the desk has the final say.
