Flying from Bangkok to Colombo

In short

A number of airlines fly nonstop from Bangkok to Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) near Colombo: SriLankan Airlines and Thai Airways International from Suvarnabhumi (BKK), and Thai AirAsia from Don Mueang (DMK). The 2,392 km flight takes about 3 hours 30 minutes. Sri Lanka and Thailand make an easy two-country holiday, with tea country and beaches in one and city and islands in the other, and Buddhist pilgrims travel in both directions.

SriLankan and Thai bags against Thai AirAsia extras

SriLankan Airlines and Thai Airways are full-service and include a checked bag and meal. Thai AirAsia's base fare covers a cabin bag only, and hold luggage, meals and seat choice cost extra. Surfboards and diving kit count as special baggage on most airlines, so ask before booking.

Rail Link to Suvarnabhumi or A1 and A2 buses to Don Mueang

Suvarnabhumi is about 25 km east of central Bangkok, 27 minutes from Phaya Thai on the Airport Rail Link. Don Mueang is in the north, reached by the A1 bus from Mo Chit 2 or the A2 from Victory Monument for 30 baht, or by the SRT Red Line from Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal.

Sri Lanka's ETA and the free 30-day visa for 40 countries

All foreign nationals need an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before arrival, applied for on the official site, eta.gov.lk. Since 25 May 2026, nationals of 40 listed countries have received a free 30-day tourist ETA, with a second entry allowed within the 30 days. Check the official list for your own passport, as other nationalities pay a processing fee. Apply only on eta.gov.lk and ignore agents. Stays beyond 30 days need a paid extension.

E03 expressway or bus 187 from Katunayake

Bandaranaike International Airport is at Katunayake, about 35 km north of Colombo. The Colombo–Katunayake Expressway (E03), 28.87 km long and open since October 2013, brings the city within roughly 30 to 45 minutes by taxi.

The cheapest option is the route 187 airport bus run with the airport operator. Its air-conditioned coaches run 24 hours a day along the expressway to Colombo Fort Railway Station, a trip of about 50 minutes, where trains leave for Kandy, Galle and the hill country. Negombo's beach hotels are much closer to the airport, which suits a late arrival.

Arriving from Dhaka for the Colombo flight

Travellers flying in from Dhaka on Biman, US-Bangla or Thai Airways land at Suvarnabhumi (see our Dhaka to Bangkok flights page), the same airport as the SriLankan and Thai Airways departures. A Thai AirAsia flight from Don Mueang means crossing the city and checking in again, so leave at least four hours. Our Sri Lanka visa page covers the ETA in more detail. Dhaka also has its own flights to Colombo: see Dhaka to Colombo flights.
