In-town check-in and the Airport Express
Start the day light. Cathay offers in-town check-in at Hong Kong and Kowloon stations on the Airport Express, so you can hand over bags in the city and ride to Chek Lap Kok with just a backpack; Hong Kong station serves every participating airline, Kowloon a shorter list. The 35.2 km line takes about 24 minutes from Hong Kong station. For an early start, hotels in Tung Chung or on the airport island save the morning journey.
Terminal 1 covers about 570,000 m2, one of the largest passenger buildings anywhere, so check the walking time to your gate after passport control.
Visa checks for Hong Kong residents
Bangladeshi passport holders enter on the passport. Foreign visitors, including Hong Kong residents on other passports, should check Bangladesh's visa requirements before they fly. Clocks go back two hours on the way west.
From Hazrat Shahjalal into Dhaka and beyond
Dhaka's airport is on the northern edge of the city. Terminal 3 was inaugurated in a first stage on 7 October 2023; the civil aviation minister has set a soft opening for 16 December 2026 and full operations for March or April 2027, so the older terminals handle the traffic for now. The raised expressway runs 11.5 km from Kawla, next to the airport, to Farmgate, with exits at Banani, above the ground-level traffic toward Gulshan and Motijheel. BRTC buses use it, and Airport Railway Station sits directly across the highway for trains. For Cox's Bazar or Sylhet, the domestic terminal stands to the left of the international buildings.

Getting there
About 24 minutes. The line runs 35.2 km with only five stations, Hong Kong, Kowloon, Tsing Yi, the airport and AsiaWorld-Expo, so it is the most predictable way out from Central or Tsim Sha Tsui.
Either can work for Cathay Pacific, which is among the airlines offering in-town check-in. Hong Kong station handles every participating airline, while Kowloon station serves a shorter list, so if you are booked on a partner airline for part of the trip, Hong Kong station is the safer choice. Check the cut-off time on the MTR or Cathay site before you go.
It sits on the island of Chek Lap Kok, joined to the north shore of Lantau beside the new town of Tung Chung. Hotels around Tung Chung or at the airport itself save the morning journey if you arrive in Hong Kong from elsewhere the night before.

The raised expressway. It has carried traffic from Kawla, next to the airport, to Farmgate since September 2023, a stretch of 11.5 km with exits at Banani. It runs above the ground-level traffic for most of the way. A Karwan Bazar ramp was added in March 2024.
Possibly, but not certainly. The new building was opened in a first stage on 7 October 2023, but work is still under way and older terminals continue to handle much of the traffic. Once it is complete, the airport's yearly capacity rises from 8 million to 24 million passengers.
Take a domestic flight from the same airport. After customs, walk to the single-storey domestic terminal, which stands to the left of the international buildings. If the domestic leg is on a separate ticket, the airline will not rebook you after a late arrival from Hong Kong, so build in plenty of spare time.
Cancellations & changes
Clocks go back two hours. Hong Kong keeps UTC+8 and Bangladesh UTC+6, and neither changes its clocks during the year. Because the flight heads west, the clock gains back two hours on the way, so you land only a little over two hours later by local time than you took off.

Prices & payment
The government operator BRTC began a bus service on the expressway between the airport and Farmgate on 18 September 2023. It suits someone with a backpack and a cabin bag. With the full 30 kg checked allowance in tow, a pre-booked car or ride-hailing taxi is more practical.
