Hong Kong to Chiang Mai flight guide
HK Express flies nonstop from Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) to Chiang Mai International Airport (CNX), the gateway to northern Thailand. The flight covers 1,605 km in about 2 hours 30 minutes in the air, and HK Express quotes roughly 3 hours 5 minutes gate to gate. It suits Hong Kong residents on a short break and travellers starting a Thailand trip in the north.
HK Express is the only airline on the route. As a low-cost airline it includes only a cabin bag in the basic fare, so add checked baggage at booking. Meals are bought on board or pre-ordered online, where the choice is wider.
HK Express has advertised one-way fares from HKD 390 for November and December 2026 travel, before taxes and surcharges, with limited seats at that price. The cool season from November to February is the peak: warm days, evenings that can drop to about 10°C, and lots of Hong Kong visitors around Christmas and Chinese New Year. From April temperatures climb to about 40°C, and the rains come roughly from June to October, when fares are lower and the countryside is green.
Immigration is in the international hall of the airport's single building. Entry rules for Thailand depend on your passport, and every foreign visitor completes the Thailand Digital Arrival Card online within 72 hours before landing; our Thailand visa page has the details. Note the shorter stays introduced on 15 September 2026: the 60-day exemption ended, and visitors from 60 countries and territories now get 30 days visa-free.
The airport is close to the centre, so transfers are short and cheap. AOT runs shuttle vans from Gate 12 of the international terminal at flat fares: 40 baht on route A1 to Nimmanhaemin, Huay Kaew and the moat, 40 baht on route A2 to Mahidol Road, the Night Bazaar and the Chang Khlan Road hotels, and 60 baht on route A3 to Ring Road 2. The yellow and red lines of the Chiang Mai City Bus run from 06:00 to 23:30. Taxis, songthaews and Grab all serve the airport; with a songthaew or tuk-tuk, agree the price before you get in. Many hotels collect guests for free, so check your booking. Rental car desks are on the first floor.
The Airport Express from Hong Kong station in Central reaches the airport in about 24 minutes, stopping at Kowloon and Tsing Yi. Allow time for the low-cost check-in queue and bag drop, since HK Express closes its counters before departure.
Turn your watch back one hour on landing (Hong Kong is UTC+8, Thailand UTC+7). From Chiang Mai, domestic flights run frequently to Bangkok for connections across Asia, for example to South Asia via Suvarnabhumi (see Bangkok to Dhaka flights). Hong Kong has its own direct services as well, such as Hong Kong to Dhaka flights, useful if you plan a loop through the region.
