Hua Hin to Chiang Mai flight guide

Flying from Hua Hin to Chiang Mai

In short

From Hua Hin, the one useful domestic flight for most travellers is Thai AirAsia's nonstop to Chiang Mai (CNX). It covers roughly 690 km in a straight line in about 1 hour 20 minutes, and lands at an airport so close to town that you can be in the Old City within 20 minutes of collecting your bag.

There is nothing else on offer. Hua Hin has no scheduled flights to Bangkok, so the alternative is a coach to Bangkok and a second leg north by air, rail or road. Thai AirAsia does not fly every day in every season, and published weekly frequencies for this route disagree with each other, so let the search tell you which days are operating.

No lounge and few seats at Hua Hin departures

The airport is a small building on Phetkasem Road, about 7 km north of the town centre and 15 to 25 minutes away by taxi. It opens around 06:00 and closes in the evening, there is no lounge, and seating in the departure area is limited, so there is no reason to turn up hours early. If you are coming down from Bangkok for this flight, the Roong Reuang coach from Suvarnabhumi ends at a terminal close to the airport, and you can skip the trip into town. Cash is the safer bet for taxis and songthaews here.

Flat-fare taxis, Grab and the RTC bus into Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai International Airport sits about 4 km south-west of the centre. The taxi counter in arrivals sells flat-fare rides to most city addresses, and Grab and Bolt drivers collect from a marked area outside Exit 2. In daytime, the air-conditioned RTC bus route 24 runs two loops, one towards Tha Phae Gate and the Night Bazaar, the other towards Suan Dok and Nimman. Shared vans to hotel zones leave from the international side when full. The Chiang Mai airport guide has the details, including left luggage and lounges.

Checked bags for beach gear heading north

The cheapest Thai AirAsia fares are cabin-bag only. If you are carrying beach gear north, add a checked bag when you book rather than at the counter.

Cool mornings, Yi Peng and the burning season

Chiang Mai is most comfortable from November to February, when mornings are cool and the air is clear. Yi Peng and Loy Krathong fall around the November full moon and fill the city. February to April is the burning season, when smoke can bring poor air and occasional flight delays, and the rains run from about June to October, when the hills turn green and the city is quieter.

A small airport with a long history

Hua Hin's airfield dates from 3 February 1961, and the Department of Airports still runs it. The boundary between Prachuap Khiri Khan and Phetchaburi provinces runs through the site, so the airport sits partly in Hua Hin and partly in Cha-am. There is one runway of about 2,100 m. Traffic in 2025 was 63,230 passengers, lower than the year before.

Other than Thai AirAsia's Chiang Mai flight, the schedule lists EZY Airlines to Phuket, Hat Yai and Surat Thani. Expansion plans cover a bigger terminal and a second building.

Your arrival airport in numbers

Your arrival airport is owned by the Royal Thai Air Force and operated by Airports of Thailand. It has worked 24 hours a day since April 2014 and handled 9,517,206 passengers in 2025, of whom about 2.57 million were on international flights. Thai AirAsia, founded in 2003 and flying since February 2004, counts it as one of its seven operating bases.
