Flying from Jeddah to Sylhet

In short

Biman Bangladesh Airlines is the only airline flying nonstop from King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah (JED) to Osmani International Airport in Sylhet (ZYL). Its Boeing 777-300ER covers 5,362 km in about 6 hours 55 minutes, which lets Umrah pilgrims and workers from greater Sylhet fly home without changing planes in Dhaka.

BG236 twice weekly, 30 kg and Zamzam rules

BG236 runs twice a week. Economy includes 30 kg of checked baggage and 7 kg in the cabin. Ask Biman about its current rule for carrying Zamzam water before you buy any, and pack dates in the suitcase.

The 777-300ER is a large aircraft for Osmani. Its runway, at 3,120 m, takes the jet comfortably, but the terminal is small, with capacity of around 600,000 passengers a year. When 419 people come off one flight, expect immigration and the belts to be busy.

Haramain railway to the airport station

The Haramain high-speed railway has served the airport through its own station since December 2019. Makkah to Jeddah's Al Sulaymaniyah station takes about 43 minutes for 77 km, after which a 3.75 km spur runs into the airport. With bags, the train is often easier than a long taxi ride.

Read the terminal printed on your ticket. Terminal 1 is Saudia's home and has the rail station, and the North Terminal mostly handles foreign carriers. If yours says North Terminal and you arrive by train, plan for the hop between buildings. Hajj groups follow their agency's instructions, since the Hajj Terminal, built to hold 80,000 people, is used during the pilgrimage.

Comparing a Madinah departure for Sylhet

Biman also lists Madinah among its Sylhet routes, which suits pilgrims who finish at the Prophet's Mosque. The two services do not necessarily operate on the same days, so compare both airports for your dates.

Airport Road hotels and Dargah Gate stays

Osmani sits on the northern edge of Sylhet. A hotel stands beside the airport on Airport Road for anyone landing late, and hotels for visitors to the Shah Jalal Dargah are grouped around Dargah Gate. A new terminal with six boarding bridges and 36 check-in counters is due in December 2027.

Weather shapes the first days home. May to September brings most of the year's rain, with June the wettest month, while November to February is dry, which suits older relatives back from Umrah. Ratargul swamp forest, about 26 km away in Gowainghat, is flooded and open to boats from about May to early October; arrange permission with the forest office first.

For Dhaka, Air Astra, Novoair and US-Bangla run domestic flights from Osmani, much quicker than the road. On a separate ticket, leave time to collect your 30 kg, clear customs and check in again.

Timing & weather

Look at the terminal printed on your Biman ticket. Terminal 1 is Saudia's home and has the rail station, while the North Terminal mostly handles foreign carriers.
