Flying from Jeddah to Dhaka

In short

Multiple airlines fly nonstop from King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah (JED) to Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka (DAC): Saudia, Biman Bangladesh Airlines and US-Bangla Airlines. The 5,231 km flight takes about 6 hours 40 minutes, and it carries pilgrims after Umrah and workers going home at the end of a contract.

Comparing Saudia, Biman and US-Bangla

Saudia has the most departures, about 15 a week on SV802, SV808, SV810 and SV812, all on the Boeing 777-300ER, with 23 kg of checked baggage. Biman flies the same type with 30 kg. US-Bangla joined the route in 2024 with an Airbus A330-300 and also allows 30 kg. Everyone gets 7 kg in the cabin.

Cabin size differs too. US-Bangla's A330-300 has 436 seats, all economy. Biman's 777-300ER has 419, and Saudia's version typically around 360. A larger cabin can mean seats left when you book late, but it does not change the baggage rule, and overweight bags at a Jeddah counter are an expensive surprise.

Saudia at Terminal 1, others to confirm

Saudia runs its international flights from Terminal 1, where it moved in August 2019. Biman and US-Bangla passengers should look for the terminal on the booking; the North Terminal is used mainly by foreign airlines. Confirm it a day before, because arriving at the wrong building means a transfer across the airport before check-in.

Pilgrims can skip the highway. Haramain trains from Makkah reach Jeddah's Al Sulaymaniyah station after 77 km and about 43 minutes, and a 3.75 km branch, opened on 11 December 2019, carries on to the airport station. The airport is about 19 km north of the city centre for anyone coming by road. Make sure your exit or final exit visa is in order before you set off.

Working out your landing time in Dhaka

Add three hours to Jeddah time and then the flight length. Saudi Arabia keeps UTC+3 and Bangladesh UTC+6, with no seasonal change in either, so the gap is fixed all year.

Shahjalal's older halls until Terminal 3 opens

Hazrat Shahjalal stands in Kurmitola on the northern edge of Dhaka. Terminal 3 received a partial inauguration on 7 October 2023 and is due to soft-open on 16 December 2026, with full operations planned for March or April 2027, so the older halls carry the traffic until then. When finished, the airport's yearly capacity rises from 8 million to 24 million passengers.

Many passengers never cross the city. Those bound for home districts carry straight on by domestic flight, by train from Airport Railway Station across the road, or by intercity bus. US-Bangla is based at Shahjalal along with Biman, Novoair and Air Astra, so a connection on the same airline is easier to sort out if the Jeddah flight runs late. You still collect bags and clear customs before checking in at the domestic terminal.

For central Dhaka, the toll expressway from Kawla has run 11.5 km to Farmgate since September 2023, with a Karwan Bazar ramp since March 2024, and skips much of the traffic around Banani and Mohakhali. A BRTC bus has used it since 18 September 2023; it suits workers with hand luggage only, while anyone carrying 30 kg plus Zamzam and dates will find a car far easier.
