Dhaka to London flight guide
Biman Bangladesh Airlines is the only airline flying from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka (DAC) to London Heathrow (LHR) without a change of plane. Its Boeing 787-8 covers the 8,014 km in about 11 hours 20 minutes nonstop. Most of its London flights call at Sylhet on the way, which stretches the trip to about 13 hours 15 minutes, still shorter than most connections through the Gulf.
Read the routing before you pay. A Sylhet call shows as a stop in the itinerary, and those flights serve Sylhet Division, the region most British Bangladeshi families come from. Passengers from there can board at Osmani International without travelling to Dhaka first. Both versions use the 787-8, which has 271 seats.
Economy tickets on this route include 46 kg of checked baggage and 7 kg in the cabin, a big part of Biman's appeal for students moving to the UK. Split the weight across two sturdy cases so neither is too heavy for a train, and pack bulky, cheap items such as bedding, kitchen things and books from home.
Heathrow is about 23 km west of central London and runs four terminals, numbered 2 to 5. The Elizabeth line runs from the airport straight across the centre to Whitechapel, on the edge of Tower Hamlets, where British Bangladeshis make up about a third of the borough's population. The Piccadilly line is slower and cheaper. Both take contactless bank cards.
The UK's rules depend on nationality. Many visitors need an Electronic Travel Authorisation, while others, including Bangladeshi citizens, need a UK visa issued before travel for any visit. Keep visa documents, any university or employer letter and the address of your first night's stay in your cabin bag for the Border Force officer. The UK moves to British Summer Time from the last Sunday in March to the last Sunday in October, when London is five hours behind Dhaka; in winter the gap is six hours.

Booking
Look at the itinerary, not just the price. A Sylhet call shows as a stop in the routing, and the journey time is about 13 hours 15 minutes against about 11 hours 20 minutes nonstop. Both use the 787-8 and the same 46 kg allowance, so the choice comes down to how long you want to spend on board.
Six in winter and five in summer. Bangladesh does not change its clocks, but the UK moves to British Summer Time from the last Sunday in March to the last Sunday in October. Check which period your travel date falls in before you work out the local arrival time.
Biman's Boeing 787-8 has 271 seats. On a flight of more than eleven hours, get up and walk the aisle every couple of hours, drink plenty of water and wear loose clothes. Choose an aisle seat at booking if you expect to move about often.
Heathrow runs four terminals, numbered 2 to 5, after Terminal 1 closed in 2015. Check your booking or Biman's website for the terminal before you travel, especially on the return journey, since the stations and drop-off points are different for each building.
General
Split the weight across two sturdy cases so neither is too heavy to lift onto a train, and put documents, laptop and a change of clothes in the 7 kg cabin bag. Bedding, kitchen items and books are bulky but cheap to bring from home, which is where a large allowance pays for itself.
A warm coat, a jumper and a pair of socks, since the walk from the aircraft to the train can be cold and a delayed suitcase would leave you without them. Also carry your visa documents, university or employer letter and the address of your first night's accommodation for the UK border officer.
Getting there
The Elizabeth line runs from the airport straight to Whitechapel without a change, which is the simplest choice with heavy bags. The Piccadilly line on the Underground costs less but takes longer and needs a change to reach east London. Both accept contactless bank cards at the gates.
Only with a lot of luggage or a group. Heathrow is about 23 km west of the centre, and a black cab across London is expensive and slow in traffic. A pre-booked minicab is cheaper, but for one or two people the train is usually both quicker and better value.
Yes. Biman serves Heathrow from both Dhaka and Sylhet, and for families from the Sylhet region this saves the domestic leg or the long road trip to Dhaka. Search with Sylhet as the starting point to see which Heathrow departures you can join there.
Visa & documents
Yes, if you travel on a Bangladeshi passport. Bangladeshi citizens need a UK visa issued before travel for any visit, short or long, and the airline will not board you without it. Make sure the passport stays valid for the whole stay, and carry an invitation letter from your relatives in case the officer asks.
